I am going to make a point that is connected but a bit more general than this specific instance.

It is hard to represent people when you don’t really understand what they are going through..

When you make 3-4x what they make as a person or family. When you live total different conditionality. The list goes on and on.

Many times that leads to not only disconnection but something much worse which is out of touch apathy.

There are people and families in this nation that are experiencing so much alienation, pain, anger, stress, anxiety, and general frustration over the housing crisis, grocery price crisis, and in general affordability of life crisis/quality of life crisis.

This kind of thing ends up creating issues much bigger than purely economic.

We need leaders that are deeply connected to the communities they serve not simply those of certain status, wealth, and power they may be surrounded by. They need to hear and understand other voices again not just the ones that have means to control the discussions and narratives within those discussions.

I think this touches on why democracy overall is in such an ill state. People really are struggling to feel represented.

Carney choosing Robertson has housing minister is such a mind boggling move. You’d be hard pressed to find an MP with a worse record on housing and he’s failed repeatedly when asked questions on the subject,

“Asked about whether house prices need to go down, Robertson replied “no.”

That’s despite prices in Canada, especially Vancouver and Toronto, being among the world’s most unaffordable. The average cost of a detached or semi-detached home in Vancouver was $827,000 when Robertson was elected mayor in 2008. It was $2.3 million when he left office in 2018.

Robertson told journalists during the exchange he was advocating for delivering more government-subsidized “affordable housing.” He later clarified on X his opposition to prices declining is rooted in how, for most Canadians, their home “is their most valuable asset.””

This just feels like such an unforced error on the liberals part

A lot of people seem to misunderstand the function of the Housing Minister. His job is not to make housing „affordable“. His job is to ensure that the real-estate industry, which is the largest driver of GDP growth in Canada, is thriving and consistently growing. Any meaningful decline in housing valuations is completely counter to this goal. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that the Housing Minister firmly rejected the idea of inducing reductions in housing prices.
