There has been a similar increase in reporting of sexual offences in England and Wales over the last 10 years, but for the most part that is in increase in *reporting*, and in part due to a long-term low in 2014 (i.e. 10 years ago – which is where the article is comparing).
Definitely something to look into, but maybe not something to be „staggered by“ until the research shows what is going on.
Rape Crisis Scotland seems to be blaming online pornography. The political groups are blaming whatever aligns with their politics.
Hopefully one day we can become like one of the more enlightened countries that have close to no reported sexual crimes against women, places like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Emirates.. oh wait… oh no…
In any case I’m sure the problem is online pornography, escort services, video games, alcohol, VPNs or Andrew Tate. Or maybe incels, that’s the hot word now.

I can’t wait for the real reason to come out in 10 years
I really hope that this is only an increase in reporting and that attitudes are changing to towards reporting even with the justice system still having very low convicted rates from sexual offences, not an increase in sexual crime with a corresponding increase in unreported incidents.
Unfortunately this is something we’ll never know as unreported is unreported. I can hope, but I’m not optimistic. There are too many horrible people in the world.
