Iran may still possess the ability to build a “dirty bomb” even after the [United States struck its key nuclear sites](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/everything-we-know-us-attack-on-iran-so-far-3763890?ico=in-line_link) — but using such a weapon would be “strategic suicide” for the regime, experts have said.
A dirty bomb or “radiological dispersal device” combines conventional explosives with radioactive material rather than being an actual [nuclear weapon](https://inews.co.uk/topic/nuclear-weapons?ico=in-line_link).
The US conducted precision bunker-buster strikes on Iran’s key nuclear sites—the Fordow and Natanz uranium enrichment sites and the Isfahan research centre at the weekend, aiming to delay [Tehran’s nuclear programme](https://inews.co.uk/topic/nuclear-program-of-iran?ico=in-line_link) by destroying critical infrastructure.
However, a [leaked report from the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/all-ways-trump-contradicted-leaked-iran-bombing-intelligence-3769439?ico=in-line_link) suggests that the strikes did not destroy the sites and likely set back Iran’s nuclear programme by only a few months.
Intelligence suggests that over [400 kilograms of uranium](https://inews.co.uk/news/ayatollah-hiding-iran-uranium-3767106?ico=in-line_link) enriched to 60 per cent purity was quietly moved out of the Fordow site before it was hit — an amount sufficient for about nine nuclear warheads.
David Albright, President and founder of the Institute for Science and International Security, has also pointed to intelligence evidence that more enriched uranium stocks were in the rubble of the damaged nuclear sites than believed previously.
Funny how the same countries sitting on thousands of warheads act shocked Iran might build one dirty bomb. After bombing their nuclear sites and stealing their uranium, they’re now “concerned” about what Iran might do? Classic projection wrapped in hypocrisy.
I mean, sure, but its completely hypothetical, even in the most irrational of retaliations I don’t see their leadership going this route, so at his point this feels more like fearmongering.
There we go, I was wondering when “dirty bomb” fear-mongering would return from the depths of the aughts.

This is fear mongering. Any attempt by the Iranians to use such a weapon would trigger a response not only from Israel, but the United States and the rest of NATO.
Just because we are enemies doesn’t mean they are stupid.
I suppose a dirty bomb is like a nuclear bomb in that you want one but you can never use it.
The use of a regular nuclear warhead by Iran would spell disaster for the regime as well. That doesn’t mean there isn’t an alarmingly high chance that they might do it if they developed the capability.
