I don’t have a very strong opinion on the DST, but its very clear that there is strong lobby against it, among both academics and the business lobby. We’ve seen their years long effort to try and stop the tax, and now they are very clearly using this current crisis to opportunistically push their preferred outcome. Isn’t it funny how we don’t see an organized to push to throw away supply management – or any other trade irritant – to appease the US, like we do for the DST?
My position is that Canada shouldn’t unilaterally give up the DST without extracting concessions, which we did with the OECD global tax deal under the Biden administration, now the Trump admin has withdrawn from it, and is trying to actively punish countries for complying with a deal the US drafted. If we drop the DST now, we reward this outrageous behaviour.
I also think its such a shame that the anti-DST folks are waging their crusade publicly, because they must know that this weakens our leverage during the ongoing negotiations. I guess to them weakening our position in the trade talks is worth achieving their pet project – killing this tax

I fully expect it to be a “concession” in the trade deal with the US. Carney isn’t going to just drop one of his key negotiating tools before coming to a deal.

I love how we’re giving him a pass on this while the entire internet was rabidly furious when Trudeau did it.
