Supply management isn’t perfect, but the alternatives are impoverished Canadian farmers or no Canadian farmers because it’s unprofitable.

Shameful – kneecap all future trade negotiations to protect one sliver of the economy at the expense of other more productive segments while imposing higher prices on Canadian families.
Even if one were to believe SM is the right way to run an industry, it still doesn’t make any sense to make it untouchable. Like, are we saying it is better to have a weaker semiconductor, energy, agriculture, advanced manufacturing, and finance sector just so that we can have a stable dairy industry.
I’d rather not have subpar Frankenstein egg and dairy products from the states here. No thanks. This article reads like someone got paid by foreigners for to drum up an issue here
Tl;dr MPs and Senators both voted unanimously for supply management, which makes certain products more expensive.
Supply management is dumb, it’s just that most people don’t care that much.
A sad day for all Canadians. We could have had more trade and thus lower costs of living, but instead 40 million people are being forced to pay more to keep a vote bank happy.
I’ll never stop saying it: protectionism is a failed policy and always has been. It was stupid when tronald did it, and it’s stupid when Carney does it. Tariffs are now, always have been, and always will be horrible economic policy which does nothing but prevent the creative growth needed in a functional economy.
Totally agreed. Supply management has to go. The consumer should be free to buy whatever they want.
And I honestly don’t give a damn about dairy farmers. No industry deserves this kind of protection. None.
It’s always interesting to me that there is continued support for supply management across all parties (and often emphatic support), but I don’t think the govt or opposition ever does a great job explaining why they think protecting supply managed dairy and poultry is so critical.
I am okay with keeping the Americans from flooding us with cheap, low quality dairy products but I would love to be able to get more European and New Zealand dairy products. I don’t think we need to scrap the whole supply management system but it would be great to loosen it to have more imports.
More international choices does not have to mean Canadian market destruction.
I think supply management makes sense. If we’ve learned anything from covid, tariffs, avian flu, etc. a separate domestic food supply is essential.
However, IMHO the pricing formulas should be adjusted. Yes, profitability is an important part in ensuring we maintain our domestic production, but when the demand for a quota is this high it indicates that too much money is on the table. It should be a profitably sustainable business, not a lucrative one.
Does anyone have context for this claim? … Seems like the sort of thing that makes a good headline but glosses over a ton of other, perhaps more relevant details. But maybe I’m just being overly cynical.
