the reason turkey could avoid full-out wars is due to having a powerful army. we also had a somewhat functional democracy, and alongside with atatürk’s heritage of peaceful approach to foreign relations, we always stayed level-headed and didnt attempt dangerous adventures like iraq or israel did.
those who make infantile criticisms towards democracy have no idea how much it protected us from receiving or delivering inhuman destruction. democracy is not a luxury of the elites or some sort of „soft mens“ system – it means a country is functional and remains within rational boundaries of reality. anything else in this day and age is fantasy.
