Two weeks ago, Jen Hamilton, a nurse with a sizable following on [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@_jen_hamilton_?lang=en) and %5BInstagram%5D(https://www.instagram.com/p/DKVrukwub7O/), picked up her Bible and made a video that would quickly go viral.

“Basically, I sat down at my kitchen table and began to read from Matthew 25 while overlaying MAGA policies that directly oppose the character and nature of Jesus’ teachings,” she told HuffPost.

In the comments of the video ― which currently has more than 8.6 million views on TikTok ― many (Christians and atheists alike) applauded Hamilton. Others picked a bone with Christians who uncritically support Trump.

*“As a Christian, I don’t think you can be both MAGA and Christian,” one person wrote in the comments of the video.*

But not everyone was a fan.

Many years ago I listened to one of those „Great Courses“ about the development of Christianity from the first century onward. The professor who did it made one particular observation that has stuck with me: that at some point in the first several centuries, mainstream Christianity ceased to be the religion *of* Jesus, and became a religion *about* Jesus. Essentially meaning that as early (and subsequent) Christians became focused on debates of Jesus’s divinity, and emphasized how much they loved *him,* and how *he* ‚died for their sins‘ etc, the focus shifted away from actually living according to the philosophy which he taught.

All you have to do is read the teachings of Jesus to know that true Christianity is not compatible with the MAGA movement. I like to refer to their brand of spirituality as ‘death cult Christians’.

We, as a Church, are swallowing a camel.

Matthew 23 serves as a warning against a problem that is ever so present in today’s theology, speficially in the US, but can be applied to us all as a Church.

Religious hypocrisy.

I feel the Pharisees serve as not just a religious group at that time; but a template for a *type* of religious person that can exist anytime and still does today.

Hypocrites! That’s what Jesus called the Pharisees, who followed man-made traditions while often disregarding God’s laws. God see’s into our hearts. He wants our genuine devotion an attention.

I would like to focus on one note of this chapter. Straining out a gnat (23:24)

The rabbis strained wine to remove any small, unclean insects (Lev. 11:23, 41) that could contaminate it, swallowing a camel.

The camel was the largest land animal in Palestine (see Matt. 19:24). It was unclean (Lev. 11:4).

Jesus is overstating to make a point. The Pharisees had become lost in the details, while neglecting the law’s major purpose

Yet, how often do we look around and see so many who claim to know Christ and live by His commands do the polar opposite of this?

It’s even more exposing when I plead in the Gospel’s defense as an A-political only inspired by Christ, I get called „progressive,“ „leftist,“ and „liberal.“

Then I get accussed of weaponizing the bible. That’s ironic. How is love a weapon for anything except hate?

Jesus explicitly throws people into hell for supporting what MAGAs do. This is one of the most unambiguous lessons in the entire Bible.

The reminder: separation of church and state was the doctrine adopted by the Supreme Court with the intent to protect religion from government influence. The belief was that the government would corrupt it and it was the only true way to have religious freedom

We should never be a Christian state.

I’ve sometimes thought that signs quoting some of the Beatitudes (Matthew 5) might have more impact than signs ridiculing Trump.

I know people in the MAGA cult who are literally inventing a new religion as a replacement for the teachings of Christ (though keeping the same name, naturally), as a way of getting around contradictions like this. They believe in reincarnation and aliens who will come to Earth and cure all diseases if we just recognize the signs. They believe in manifesting their beliefs to make them reality. Basically, MAGA Christianity is undergoing a period of rapid syncretism where instead of having *any* coherent theology, it is just a grab-bag of whatever disparate ideas the MAGAite can cling to in order to justify doing whatever it is they want to do.

Not that this is anything new. Medieval Christianity went through the same process. And it was facilitated by kings who wanted to influence scripture in order to solidify their power bases. However, in the centuries since then, Christian dogma largely settled into a stable form that, for good or for ill, could at least be understood. Now we have oligarch supporters writing new Bibles „translated“ from the original source that do away with all the „Satanic influences“ hidden in earlier Bibles. I can’t help but think that the MAGA cult is trying to establish a new centuries-long era of divine-right kings so that the rest of us can be forced back into serfdom.

And gullible dupes who’d rather feel self-righteously angry all the time than stop and think for even about the mystery they claim to believe in are making it work. It makes me glad to see any kind of push-back from true believers.

Literally the entire point of the books of Matthew and Luke is to treat the foreigner in your land as though they were your own family.

I have a distaste for both. Imaginary friends telling you to bomb countries is terrifying to me.

Most people who are “Christian” do not care at all about the theology of it, they just like the group that they are in. Basic tribalism

I left my denomination two years ago because I saw humans say they „follow Jesus“ and support the most genius and damaging policies.

I became a Satanist because I believe that attempting to follow the Seven Fundamental Tenets of the Satanic Temple will help guide me to help those around me and try to be a better person than I was before.

For so many humans, being a „Christian“ is nothing more than a title they use to Lord over some sort of superiority they believe they were born with.
