Not surprised.
Until housing feels like it’s been figured out, and until seemingly all crime in the GTA isn’t perpetrated by South Asian Gangs, public opinion on immigration will remain low.
I hate that we’ve normalized this debate in terms of blunt caps and absolute highs or lows.
Anybody who can immigrate and be put on a path towards becoming a net contributor in the short term should be welcomed with open arms at all times, in whatever numbers they come in, period. To cap them is to cut off our nose to spite our face.
The debate needs to be how we can refine our requirements and processes to properly identify and prioritize these folks and go back to making immigration a competitive advantage.

We dont know yet , the CPC loves to gas light it though, immigration is the og tool for political optics.
To be frank I dont think the cpc will get the effect they want , immigration has been burning mainstream for a while , but the fuel is in the economics .
Most people have an understanding of its importance , the fires start when people’s pockets are hurt . Poor economics always fuel immigration hate , its pretty much human nature .
Carney dosnt have to get people purple Lamborghinis today for the heat to die down , he just has to show Canadians that hes moving in the direction that will lift their economic well being .
I applaud him not reacting with haste and dramatics on immigration, we did have substantial cuts already, and it is too premature to tell how that settled . He could make some more slight changes to student visa and work visa to keep people cool , but yea dont overreact .
Like it or not , Carney is trying to revive investments in Canada , unstable and dramatic immigration shifts by government is something investors do not like .
I remember when 2022 People had choices. Good career opportunities and choices with negotiation power!
and corporations didn’t like that.
Maybe….just maybe, a subject like immigration shouldn’t be left in the hands of…random people answering opinion polls.
We live in a democracy. The majority want fewer immigrants.
The government should take immediate steps to make HUGE cuts to reflect that. This isn’t a fringe issue anymore.

the number of people on r/canada who seem to think that allowing the population to suddenly drop by a few million will suddenly solve all the problems in this country is astonishing
Part of the problem with our immigration system is that it’s tiered and doesn’t fully account for temporary residents, like the multitude of students who hope to abuse our system to gain PR instead of going through the proper channels as economic migrants. Also, the companies had temporary workers who abuse our LMIA process.
Until those matriculate through, this problem will be everywhere. It’s highly visible in a multitude of sectors that would normally provide employment for students and other economically disadvantaged Canadians.
Not sure if this is bad policy or bad reporting or both, but just focusing on the total quantity seems stupid.
We need, for example, an estimated 30,000 more doctors by 2028 just to bring us up to the OECD average. There is zero chance of filling that gap domestically. It cannot be done. We need to be aggressively recruiting qualified immigrants in that field.
Meanwhile, something like 75% of Canadian engineering graduates never find work as engineers, so we need to stop the pipeline of unnecessary TFWs into that field and disincentivize off-shoring jobs to low-cost countries.
