Honestly, this is a bad look for padilla. He’s basically saying „i’m better than you because i have a title.“ Being a senator doesn’t make you any better. 

Also, they would have done the same thing to anyone who rushed the podium yelling at the person giving a news conference. You can see examples of this happening at republican and democratic news conferences. I don’t really know what he expected was going to happen. I say all of this as someone who hates the republican terrorists more than anyone else in this country. 

I have had many run-ins with cops especially in my youth and later I worked with cops in a professional medical setting and they are always a mixed bag regardless of the situation.

I would say about a quarter are professional another quarter are violent thugs in a gang and the rest are divided between waiting for their pension and just doing a mediocre job.

But they all cover for the bad ones! Cops pretty much invented „snitches get stitches“ and will use it faster than any criminal I’ve ever known.

We need to redo everything about them from the ground up.

The multi-part series Behind the Bastards did called Behind the Police is a great dive into understanding what we’re up against when it comes to the police, institutionally speaking.

For example, in the beginning there would be just call boxes in towns/cites to notify the authorities. Only they were locked and the only folks to have the keys to get into the call boxes to raise help were, you guessed it, white people. Just one early example.

Mistreatment and blatant racism is not new. It is becoming more evident though.

The people without titles would have gone to jail. He was treated better than most would have been. If anyone bursts into a room designated for a divisive official to hold an event and tries to make themself the main attraction, they should expect to be met by the security there. His title does not give him special privileges every where he goes. I admire him for his effort, but no one should be surprised by the result. Watch the video and imagine it was AOC giving the conference and some large person started barging towards the podium? Would you want the security to wait a bit a see how it played out? Does it matter if they were claiming to have some title or another in the heat of the moment?

Mr Senator, the Gestapo is currently detaining anyone that looks brown! Meeting their quota is what matters at the moment regardless of their legal status!

Maybe if he wouldn’t have come in there raging like a lunatic it would have went differently, just saying

We just had two government officials shot by an assassin. Are we sure it’s a good idea to establish the precedent that people are encouraged to use physical force to fight security in order to charge at government officials?
