So perhaps the issue is the whole idea of the Gladue principle and not that she claimed to be indigenous. But of course you can’t say that because that’s „racist“.
I mean – if we’ve established a system in which a sometimes difficult to prove and taboo to question racial identity can mean reduced sentencing and some access to government/institutional benefits, then yeah we shouldn’t be surprised when people try to fake it.
