But climate change isn’t real.
I remember one smoky summer from my childhood, 2003, now every year has at least a month. This year is going to be bad.
Isn’t the new normal grand?
This is what we all want more of, right?
Sigh…
Sadly, because of the economic incentives (especially in Alberta) this is precisely what we want a whole lot more of.
Sucks don’t it?
The forests in northern Alberta evolved to burn often. Their pine cones don’t open unless they have been burned by fire.
For the last 50 years, Alberta has had fire towers and rapid response firefighters on call to quickly get to new fires and either put them out or prepare the area for a larger fire fighting contingent. The NDP axed part of that program when they were in power, and Kenney’s UCP finished it off.
We now have a large amount of forest that has evolved to burn frequently, that was prevented from burning for 50 years and that we are now allowing to burn again. Add to that a hotter and drier climate and this isn’t getting better anytime soon.
