I’m sorry but I’m a leftie and this is something I support. It’s the 21st century. There is no legitimate reason to hide your face. No religion compels it and it’s just weird. I’m not sugar coating by it. It’s a backwards tradition that belongs in the stone age. I get some women *choose* to wear it, and that’s their decision, but it makes me uncomfortable. And the fact is most women are pressured in to wearing it by the men in their lives.
It’s human nature to want to see who you’re talking to and interacting with, and I don’t think it’s fair to label people as bigoted or racist for feeling that way.
And yes, integrating in the U.K. does actually mean accepting *our* social normals. Integrating isn’t allowing immigrants to import their own cultural beliefs and norms – it’s the complete opposite. There’s room for a bit of give and take, but ultimately if you want cohesion in society then it means accepting British cultural norms.

Purely performative. If you didn’t want an employee wearing a burka, you just wouldn’t hire them in the first place. Not that I imagine many would even be in the workplace to start with.
All Badenoch does is jump from current culture points with no real ideas.

Presumably the very, very few who might will now not actually be doing those jobs, but instead… not doing those jobs.
So what problem have we solved here? A vanishingly small minority is no longer in ‚workplaces‘.
Farage’s lot want of course to ban these women from public. I guess they’re going to have police going around ensuring that people are making correct clothing choices. You can of course cover your face with sunglasses and masks (for health reasons). But covering up for being a Muslim? That’s immoral! Get the morality police to stop it!
Imagine being the leader of the opposition and seeing Farage’s party want to ban all Burkas entirely and then come up with a watered down version that is basically meaningless. That’s what you want to spend your time doing?
I’d like to see even one instance of a woman in a burqa, in a workplace that didn’t want them to be in that burqa.

Businesses should be able to discriminate to some degree of course. If you’re working around machinery, you *must* wear clothes that are safe around that machinery. Or you straight up cannot do that job. If a woman is required to wear a burqa, the business *must* discriminate against religious/or any clothing because it impedes her ability to the do the job safely. But again, I truly do not believe an instance of this has ever occurred…
so according to the Tories: first we leave the ECHR and now we rip up the equalities act?
I thought Conservatives were supposed to like the idea of small government?

Politicians really have a gift of focusing on non issues. Couldn’t speak about how many people can’t afford bills, childcare or housing. Rather let’s focus on a tiny minority who aren’t even in the workplace to begin with.

I’ve almost never seen anyone wearing a burka; I saw two people near Regent Street in central London a while ago, and it stuck me as possibly the first time I’d ever seen any in the wild.
Also IANAtheologian, but isn’t the stuff about not allowing it at an MP’s surgeries a bit spurious, as Badenoch is a women so a Muslim women won’t need to be covered when meeting her?
Why don’t you focus on fixing the country’s actual problems Kemi? Maybe make your party look more attractive than Reform?

So to check Badenoch’s policies, should we just look at what Reform said the previous week? The way that our political class just gets their guidance from Reform and Farage now is ridiculous.
Theres something to be said about whether burkas are a tool of oppression and subjugation of women and have no place in a modern liberal democracy, and thats before considering problems with people covering their faces and the social and community based problems (isolationism, stopping / slowing proper integration, normalising deehumanisation and religious extremism in day to day life, hiding and lessening the visibility and open and free presence of women in public spaces etc) such a thing causes.
I feel the paradox of tolerance is very relevant here, if the existence of such face and body coverings inherently originates in misogyny and the subjugation of women, do we not have a cultural obligation to ban them, and in doing so be intolerant, to prevent the perpetuation and expansion of a culture of intolerance?
Let’s exclude a group that is potentially being forced to wear a burka from interacting with their non religious peers. Let’s stop them from talking to women who have a choice.
I’m sure this won’t alienate them further at all.
Not all burka wearing women are forced, but some are, and we want those women to have a way out, and it starts in shared spaces.
Badenoch once again picking a fight nobody is looking for, showing she still doesn’t understand why the Tories lost the election so badly and again not even trying to in any way actually improve the lives of anyone in the country.
