As President Donald Trump ramps up his use of the military to quell domestic dissent, he has on his side a Pentagon chief apparently ready to carry out any order Trump gives him, possibly including a potentially illegal one to shoot American citizens.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, specifically asked during his January confirmation hearing whether he would have obeyed a 2020 Trump demand to shoot protesters — as Trump had wanted then-Secretary Mark Esper to do in his first term — would not answer and instead dodged the question.
A minute later, Hegseth cited Trump’s leadership as the reason he would not provide definitive answers to that or other questions.
The question and Hegseth’s answer may suddenly be relevant again following Trump’s orders to the military to protect officers of Immigration and Customs Enforcement carrying out raids to arrest migrants who are in the country illegally.

Hegseth wrote a fucking book that talks about WANTING another civil war against “the left”. How the fuck is this surprising that he’d be a yes man, it’s why he is there.
Then it just comes down to each individual soldiers internal values. I’m a vet and I would never move my weapon out of the ready stance against another American. I remember seeing a Sargent correct a young soldier during Katrina who had his weapon in an aim position, filled me with joy seeing that.
We all need to hold SCOTUS responsible. This has nothing to do with protecting the country. They’re bending the rules to accommodate Trump.
Soldiers take an oath to protect and defend the *Constitution* not POTUS. They are obliged to refuse orders that violate that oath. It’s hard to see how an order from a felon to shoot civilian protesters exercising their freedom of expression could be constitutional.
Old bone spurs might have forgotten his oath, but I have much more faith in the honor of our military.
If Trump orders the military to shoot US civilian, reddit should revise it’s policy for posts advocating violence.
