Now that Donald Trump’s tariffs have been halted, his big, beautiful bill has been stymied, and his multi-billionaire tech bro has turned on him, how does he demonstrate his power?
On Friday morning, federal agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the FBI, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) conducted raids across Los Angeles – including at two Home Depots and a clothing wholesaler – in search of workers who they suspected of being undocumented immigrants.
Though figures vary, they reportedly arrested 121 people.
They were met with protesters who chanted and threw eggs before being dispersed by police wearing riot gear, holding shields, and using batons, guns that shoot pepper balls, rubber bullets, teargas, and flash-bang grenades.
On Saturday, Trump escalated the confrontations, ordering at least 2,000 national guard troops to be deployed in Los Angeles county to help quell the protests.
He said that any demonstration that got in the way of immigration officials would be considered a “form of rebellion.” Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff, called the protests an “insurrection”.
On Saturday evening, the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, threatened to deploy active-duty marines, saying: “The violent mob assaults on ICE and Federal Law Enforcement are designed to prevent the removal of Criminal Illegal Aliens from our soil.
A dangerous invasion facilitated by criminal cartels (aka Foreign Terrorist Organizations) and a huge NATIONAL SECURITY RISK. Under President Trump, violence and destruction against federal agents and federal facilities will NOT be tolerated.”

Trump will never stop. He is a ever increasing danger to the world.
Let me correct you: you are seeing the pre-intermediate stages of Trump’s authoritarian dictatorship.
Part of me thought we already had.
Facism is rolling out now. If somebody could do Jan6, and not regret anything, then this is nothing for them.
Trump is a serious threat and continues to tear down any guardrails for our democracy and rule of law.
But the morons setting fire to Waymo cars and engaging in violence while waving Mexican flags are literally doing his work for him.

Are literal Trump propaganda. It’s like Hitler and the Reichstag fire.
Literally on the nose depiction of the thin blue line messaging.
You have a guy on a dirt bike waving and Mexican flag in front of a line of cops with fires burning in the background.
All of these things are loaded with symbolism. The dirt bike in LA is tied to street take overs. The mask shows hidden identity. The fires show lawlessness and destruction. All evoke a feeling of lawlessness.
Then you have a literal line of cops with blue lights. Add the Mexican flag into this context and it links this all to people fears of illegal immigration and invasion and destruction of law and order.
The hard MAGA are already in the anti immigration pro ICE and police camp. But you have to worry about the middle.
The middle was very uncomfortable with masked ice agents grabbing young women or high school kids or beloved co-workers. They seem harmless, integrated, hard working.
But they see this, and they instantly buy Trump’s invasion rhetoric.
Trump is trying to turn the protests into some kind of Reichstag moment to seize even more power.
Academic freedom and freedom of speech more generally are under attack.
The press is under attack – attacking the president can now cost you your job.
The judiciary is under attack.
Corporations have acquiesced into giving up DEI programs.
Federal forces are being deployed to suppress public protest and undermine State law and order. And this is only 5 months in – think where we will be in another 3.5 years at this rate.
Make no mistake. This is Trump’s coming out party. Look at the timing of what’s going on. This week it’s everything that’s going on in Los Angeles, possibly declaring martial law, this coming weekend it’s his birthday and combine that with his show of force parade for the 14th. He needs his little narcissistic ass to look like the dictator he wants to become to the world.
First stages of police state.. If you believe that is true, please do something about it. Now. Today. Peaceful. Strike, hit the economy. Protect your rights.
As a European I’m extremely worried about the complacent attitude of Americans. And especially in this sub.

Something like 88% of cops voted for Trump and have been given too much unchecked power and impunity. On top of that MAGA loves their vigilantes and has rallied around the worst kinds of people. America has always been a police state and Trump 2.0 is just the end result.
Apparently the guardian has missed all the other stages and steps that got us to this point. In fact, there have been so many, so many from different aspects of life and realms of politics working in concert, that I’ve lost track of which step we’re actually on. But this i do know, it surely isn’t the first. We, people like me, have been sounding the alarm bells about this moment coming since orange Hitler won the election given what was in project 2025 and what he was doing and saying immediately after winning. Once we got to inauguration day, it became even more clear and even more alarms were raised. This is far closer to the end than it is the first step, make no mistake about it.
You just have to make ONE Majdan stand off to begin with. Learn from the pros – watch „Winter on Fire“ and imagine that you would stand up, as they did, no matter what it takes.

The *first* stages? No. Those were back in his first term. And even then, that follows decades of the American government (in all branches) granting police more power, more deference, and more protections from any kind accountability. And that’s all on top of a fairly rotten system that was heavily built on racism (slave patrols, Jim Crow, sundown laws, etc).
This is more like Trump approaching a middle.
