***From Paul Krugman for Rolling Stone:***

*Trump and MAGAnomics are wrecking the economy, dismantling democracy, and making America backward again.*

If you weren’t deeply afraid months ago of what a second Trump administration would mean, you weren’t paying attention. The attack on democracy and rule of law — the transformation of the land of the free into a nation where masked government agents kidnap people on the streets and opposition to the Leader is criminalized — was completely predictable.

Even those who knew that bad things were coming, however, have been startled by the damage MAGA has done to our strengths — the speed, if you like, with which it has undermined American greatness. It was obvious that Donald Trump and Co. would pursue some bad economic policies, but few expected them to create a full-blown crisis in a matter of months. It was obvious that Trump’s allies would degrade governance, but not that they would rapidly bring the whole apparatus of government to the point of collapse. It was predictable that MAGA would go after inconvenient research like the study of climate change, but not that it would move so decisively to destroy American science and intellectual endeavor in general.

And much of the damage will be permanent. Even if MAGA is eventually driven from power and its policies are reversed, we may never go back to being the nation we were just a few months ago.

Let’s start with a brief portrait of who we used to be.

Returning the masses to serfdom was supposed to be harder than this.

Yeah and the poor voted for Trump.

      No sympathy for those suckers.

The poor overwhelmingly support the Big Beautiful Buffoon. There is a price to pay for the ignorance.

It was not working how it was, we need to go forward not backward.

He and his oligarch “friends” are treating America like a colony that they can exploit. Divisions in America are allowing this to happen. Usually happens that colonizers make common cause with a minority in the prospective colony and help said minority attack their enemy. In the process the colony falls under the power of the colonizer. This is an old story. Sad that it still works. Especially in a place where people consider themselves to be so smart.

Every time he brags about the stock market, I wonder if he realizes most poor folks don’t own stocks. Working families getting crushed by inflation and wages aren’t keeping up

    8. Massive tax breaks to the ultra rich. Trickle down economics does not work. Didn’t George Bush call it Voodoo economics?

    9. He’s destroying America and all that goes with it culture, art, history, democracy, freedom, rich people, poor people, old people young people, male or female, sick people, military veterans, lgbtq people, black, white, brown color people,Asian,Jewish,African, native Americans,Canadian,Hispanic, health care, retirement pay, farmers, small businesses the list goes on,it’s not just the economy. Hold the enablers accountable also the republican house and senate with a select few Supreme Court Judges. Democracy or autocracy it’s time to pick a side no fence straddling anymore. Be well.

    10. I thought it was a Big Beautiful economy…with big beautiful numbers… It was under Biden. Under Trump, it’s tanking like a tank in water.

Good headline. It would be great the Democrats would adopt something that straightforward as one of their anti-Trump messages, but they can’t seem to come up with anything easy to understand.

You could just say “destroying the country” and little more needs to be said.

hey I got a question for trump voters in the south struggling to get by because the gop allowed all the manufacturing jobs to be shipped overseas: Was it fun owning the libs in 2024?

    17. He’s also likely planning to have agents cause violence at the protests next week so he can take military control of the country on his birthday.

The USA as a capitalist nation has always waged war on lower classes. It’s just unbelievably worse now.

    19. JazzHandsNinja42 on

Shouldn’t the headline really read “Donald Trump *Has Been AND Continues to Destroy* the Economy and…”?

    20. strategicground on

Ah yes, the ‘stable genius’ economic strategy: give billionaires tax cuts, tank the middle class, and then blame immigrants for everything. Chef’s kiss. 🍷📉

Hey, and don’t forget: all other countries are moving away from the USA. You can’t trust NATO/USA any longer, with Trump threatening to invade Canada and Greenland.

As consequences, other countries are already changing their weapon suppliers, and in 5-01y the USA won’t be #1 anymore, both in in come and in influence. Trade routes are also adjusting now.

Sooner than later, the USA won’t be able to export their deficits by forcing others to use the US Dollar, and won’t be able to project their power around the globe, because they will lose their bases.

He is more ruining than the economy.
