Rarely used until now. Going forward, I’m sure that Trump will all sorts of reasons to use the National Guard and the military against anyone not willing to roll over and be bullied by him.
Seems like these assholes never heard about what happened at Kent State back in 1970. Is that really a part of our history in the US that we need to repeat? The military has no place in addressing protestors, you’d think that would be clear from what happened back then, but those who seek to suppress the first amendment have little interest in history

Trump incited attacks against law enforcement on January 6. He then pardoned those attackers. Now, he says he won’t tolerate attacks against law enforcement. But what he really means is he feels very comfortable using force against those who disagree with him. In fact, few ideas are more core to his presidency. Thugocracy.
Every tool he has used is seldom used other than as an authoritarian. All his executive orders bypassing the houses are by seldom used national emergency proclamations.
If the National Guard had any balls, they would refuse.
So no apparent need for the National Guard on January 6th when our nation’s Capitol was being ransacked and officers being attacked but now he wants them deployed?

But, T is declaring emergencies to get around any legislation, any supreme court deliberation, and doing whatever he wants.

Of course it’s a rarely used power, because none of this is normal. It’s the start of an American dictatorship. This is the incident that the Project 2025 creators have been salivating over. The excuse for Trump to declare martial law and truely become a dictator.
For reference, it’s extremely rare for a president to activate the National Guard without approval or request from the state’s governor. It’s even rarer in this case considering that Trump invoked Title 10—rather than the Insurrection Act. Title 10 is often used under vague conditions. This was purposeful.
It also states that the president can call the National Guard into service if he considers it necessary to „repel the invasion, suppress the rebellion…“
So Trump’s directive rationalizes his actions by claiming that these protestors are in rebellion against the United States, and that the national guard must be mobilized to suppress this rebellion.

From my understanding, the last time this happened was in 1965, and the juxtaposition speaks volumes.
Some might argue that this happened under George H.W. Bush when he federalized California’s National Guard during the LA riots after the police officers who beat Rodney King were acquitted. However, the governor at the time—Pete Wilson—had already supported the move.
Which means that the last time a president deployed the National Guard without the consent of the state’s governor was back in 1965 when LBJ federalized the Alabama National Guard to protect civil rights marchers during the Selma to Montgomery marches.
So yah, think about that juxtaposition for a moment, think about the difference here, think about Donald Trump’s choice to abuse his unilateral authority—under vague conditions—to escalate violence against Americans who are protesting his administration’s ongoing authoritarian methods.
Think about what this means for America… When a president who openly flouts the law and violates the constitution, who doesn’t hesitate to attack and go after his political opponents and naysayers, who cares nothing for the rights of others—and especially those critical of him and his administration—think about what this means for our country and its citizens when a vindictive, narcissistic, temperamental, wanna-be king can grant himself the immediate authority to mobilize troops against those protesting his administration’s draconian policies and actions. When he can dictate—under his own terms—who is rebelling against his authority.

I just finished watching 12+ hours of live feed from surveillance cams located at the corners of Alameda and Alondra and Alameda and Temple streets. There were also a couple of hours of unedited and largely un-narrated aerial coverage from an NBC heli-cam flying over the NW and SE corners of DTLA and Paramount.
In no instance did I see more than fifty protestors (who were mostly watching trucks doing donuts in the intersection across from Dale’s Donuts where a car had burned) with perhaps ten or a dozen of them periodically throwing fireworks or smoke bombs at the minimal law enforcement presence, and at one point, some dude standing on the center island of the intersection selling Mexican (and American) flags to drivers waiting for the lights to change.
At Temple St in front of the Federal Building, I never saw more than thirty street participants, but counted a minimum of 200 city and federal officers all lined up in full body armor in formation blocking off onlookers, and at one point moving them fifty feet or so down the street away from the detention center entrance a few had tried to breach.
The idea of sending 2,000 National Guard troops to „control“ a handful of street hooligans is so absurd as to be laughable– although it’s not in the least bit funny– but there’s not the slightest doubt in my mind that trump will pump up this kayfabe „riot“ to justify ever more draconian tactics against a largely peaceful group of old lady seamstresses, part time students/dishwashers on scooters and bicycles, and the horrified neighbors and family members trying to track them down after a spate of arrests.

This is what Trump has been pushing for. The military is facing a test. They swore to defend the constitution against enemies foreign and domestic. If the new Joint Chiefs of Staff learned anything from Mark Milley following Trump blindly, they will refuse an unlawful order and it will stop. If not, the Republic is dead.
