SS: Summary: Modi to Attend G-7 Summit in Canada (June 2025)

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the G-7 Summit in Canada later this month, indicating an improvement in Indo-Canadian relations. The invitation was extended by newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Modi confirmed his participation via a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressing anticipation for their meeting in Kananaskis.

Although India is not a G-7 member, it has regularly been invited since 2019. The invitation comes after a period of diplomatic tension, which began in September 2023 when then-Canadian PM Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, claims that India strongly denied.

This renewed engagement also aligns with India’s rising global stature. The IMF projects that India will surpass Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy by March 2026, although its per capita income remains low.

Carney’s office has not yet issued a public statement on the invitation.

Bloomberg ran different headlines entirely based on if Modi was invented or not to this.

Not wrong per see but it seems the first headline was a rush to judgment.
