      Democrats easily defend a state House seat in South Carolina in a special election last night.

      24-year old Democrat nominee Keishan Scott won 71% to 29% (+42)

      Harris won the district by 5% last November.

      Hopefully an early indicator that the theory of when Trump himself isn’t on the ballot, Republicans don’t show up. In reality, probably not an indicator of anything except in that one district.

      I’m surprised they didn’t order a recount or think of a way to claim the election was rigged like maybe the dead were voting.

      I hate to rain on the parade, guys, but this district has been very solidly blue. The incumbent Democrat who resigned ran unopposed in the last election.

      Harris narrowly won this district so the result is not unexpected but the margin definitely is.

      Can we just go ahead and stop elevating Newsweek in this sub? It’s literally the epitome of America’s media problem where it says nothing while firing up both sides over nothing for ad revenue.

      The only “reporting” in any of any value in their pieces is “according to (better publication that actually did research)”

      This article is a great example of non-news being presented as significant, when the reality is it’s comparable to saying that AOC won her district. Democrats winning in sapphire blue districts that is neither a flip or close is a nothing story

      This district has gone to the Democrats since it was created in 2014. It’s so blue, Republicans normally don’t run a candidate. They only other time they did was in 2022, they lost 60%-40%.

      Rep. Clyburn called it a „must win“ for Democrats. Maybe not so much.

      Republicans held a supermajority in the South Carolina House yesterday, and they still hold a supermajority today.

      Approximately 14% of registered voters in the district voted in this election. Democracy in this country is a fucking joke.

      The margin is positive news, however this is just a hold for Dems. Not super surprising, as it’s just an election for state representative and the minority party usually does very well in the year after a president is elected. However the margin was massive in a district Harris only won by a few points so that is a very positive sign.

      We just really need this trend to hold up going into 2026. If Dems take back the federal House then they can stop trump from doing much of anything. In 2018 that was all it took to neuter him. He has almost no political skill when it comes to working with a bipartisan congress. He only „gets things done“ when he has a complete majority and can boss around republicans.

      This isn’t a particularly notable win considering it was already a Democratic seat, it doesn’t change the balance in the state legislature, and only 3,600 people voted.

      I mean, yay and all, but this is vastly overselling the importance of a state house seat that was expected to go Democratic.

      Well yk in any political race between a democrat and say a racist carrot, it’s going to usually be a close call. A landslide victory for the democrat is too aberrant to take seriously

      Believe it or not, MAGA cannot survive, even if it is successful in changing the rule of law. I think worst case scenario is a war of some kind, and best case is the party collapses or is elected out of power.

      Edit: in any event the U.S. is actively entering into a new phase of our history that is just as significant as post-Civil War or post-WW2.

      So what I’m taking away from this is that running on substantiatively improving people’s lives might be a winning strategy.

      Can’t wait to hear how this is somehow evidence we need to tack to the right and elect an old white man.
