    1. There is a time of year called the winter, when the temperatures get quite cold. Two windows and the air in between work very well for insulation.

    2. Short answer: Winter

      Long answer: Wiiiiiinteeeeeeer!

The air in the middle creates insulation, together with heaters create a cozy house while outside is -20°

Good insulation. Easier to make than double glazing. Where are you from?

So you dont’t have to decide between death by hypothermia or suicide from seeing the heating bill.

    5. It’s actually triple windows (two on the inside, one on the outside. It’s the best way to save on heating and insulate.

The question is – why don’t other countries do this.

To keep mosquitoes out, they will break the first window easily. You need all the protection you can get.

I work in the glazing industry.

This model is probably a suite common MSE configuration, where inner windows glass is 2-folded insulated glass unit with low-e coating and argon filling. The cavity between the glass panels is probably 16mm aluminium, stainless steel or composite spacer list, composite being marginally the best with insulating, and I really mean marginally because they all qualify to a U1.0 value. U-value tells how good the insulating properties are, the lower the better, 1.0 is nowadays the standard with private housing though 0.6 is quite common also in big windows.

Outer 1-folded layer has no insulating properties but it keeps the inner window dry and helps with noise cancellation. Its job is to protect inner window.

Nowadays big fixes windows are generally 3-folded with better insulating properties and some other qualities, like protection from UV-rays, visibility etc.

More important question would be: Why does not everybody else have them? These are the reason that despite extreme coldness our houses are always warm and cozy. In many warmer climates the houses are much colder and drafty from the inside.

To keep out the cold is the right answer.
To filter out the street noises is an extra bonus.

While visiting London, i could hear people literally talking on the streets when sitting inside the hotel room. The windows had only a one thin layer of glass…

Actually, there is a law having 3 layers of windows in modern buildings. It’s to get a sufficient isolating effect.

I’m certain this is not the intended use, but we kept water and Long drink (unopened) in there when we visited in the winter. 😭
