It’s really good the N1, pictured behind it, never worked. I’d imagine that anyone going up there in this thing would end up being the first dead human on the Moon.

Always love the designs of the Korolev era hardware, very alien/organic looking compared to the more hard techy look of western hardware. Most of which was the result of the USSR’s much weaker materials and computer industry leading to design considerations we would consider odd but made sense at the time.

As another poster mentioned, luckily the LK was never used in a real mission as we know retroactively that nothing on it would have worked:

-The amount of fuel available, while theoretically enough in calculations, would have been far under the actual requirement once hovering to find landing zones and other alterations come into effect.

-The port hole wouldn’t have given enough view for the manual landing sequence.

-The main capsule is unpressurised, so the cosmonaut would be in a suit from leaving the L3 until they return hours later. This would be both extremely uncomfortable and make the previously mentioned manual landing almost impossible to control with tight accuracy.

-The USSR lacked the detailed maps and radio data of the lunar surface that the US prepped prior to the Apollo landings, this could lead to them picking a hazardous zone to land.

-Due to it’s light weight and slightly tall nature, the chance of it tipping over was higher than the LM
