Without once taking his eye off the road, the driving instructor recounted a recent local traffic incident. “They stopped someone on the motorway, he was driving on his wheel rims,” Yann Lemaire said. “He didn’t have any tyres. Imagine what state you have to be in not to notice that.”

Carefully slowing his Mercedes, Lemaire then mentioned a student who had failed to spot a pedestrian approaching a crossing. “I know I didn’t see him,” the learner had told Lemaire. “But I didn’t hit him.”

Every driving instructor has horror stories, but most don’t have to contend with an entire national culture of irresponsible motoring. Lemaire, however, plies his trade in a country recently identified by road safety researchers as the world capital of speeding and drink-driving

    2. Anectdotal *and* don’t forget the thousands and thousands of foreign drivers every day that *significantly* shift the stats.

Nice paywall and headline btw. /s

    3. Something is “in the air”. In the last 3 days, on each day I had a “close to collision” situation with someone driving into me.

2 times on left turn when a person on neighbor lane decides to “cut the corner”. Once with someone deciding I am not there and going onto my lane from opposite traffic, because there were parked cars on their lane. I had to stop to zero to avoid collision.

      Dashcams should be allowed.
