Any move to give the NDP party status should be by changing the threshold (as was done in BC), not by granting an exemption or “bending the rules”.
I don’t think party status should be a thing at all in the house. An MP is an MP.
But so long as we have it I don’t think we should change the rules just to satisfy one group. Especially not when that group argued against changing the rules themselves before.
How bad is this for the NDP? I understand what it means for them in parliament, with committees and speaking time, but I also heard this means they lose like 100 staffers or something. What role do those people play?
Also I wonder if this creates an incentive for the NDP to want an earlier election if they think it will get them official party status.
Does it make sense for the LPC to give the NDP party status? What would they gain? What are the positives of NOT letting them obtain party status… I would appreciate your guys thoughts on this topic. Thanks.
