Start getting some people with a labour or union background. Start looking at policies that push for worker right
If the plan is to get in good with the common folks on the left. (or unions).
Your best bet isn’t getting someone as a leader who has expensive watches, and suits, and who hocks expensive rocking chairs for his influencer wife.
Just for starters.
This is going to be an interesting leadership race that is for sure. I do think that more than ever we will see a message around unions, provincial federation of labours, and labour councils. I have said elsewhere that I think the themes of economic democracy will be stressed by all of the candidates. I also think that they need to really figure out ways to connect and in general nail down the messaging to the working class outside of organized labour circles. They have seven seats and more than ever before they are associated in many peoples minds as just being like the LPC. That obviously doesn’t work long term especially under our current first past the post system.
I’ve thought about this a lot and honestly I think the biggest reason for the NDP’s failures is that they’ve fallen victim to the narrowing of how people perceive ideologies to “liberal = left and conservative = right”, mostly because of American politics dominating media etc. Not to say the NDP haven’t had major fumbles *ahem Mulcair* but they’re definitely fighting an uphill battle. Look at any province where the NDP is successful/viable and there is one common theme: there is no Liberal party and the NDP tacks to the right to fill that space. I hope there is a future in Canada for a genuine left wing party but honestly I don’t see it at this point.
