I am perplexed by this. One cannot downplay the significance. Carney is to blame for not figuring this out after one month. There are plenty of capable of people out there who can fill this role. The impact to Canadians is this will slow the Carney government down since the Chief of Staff plays a central role in the management of the entire cabinet. I don’t get it.
Also, Carney saying he is an agent of change while going after Butts after being criticized for hiring Mendicino is a real head scratcher.

> A number of senior Liberals, such as **Justin Trudeau’s former principal secretary Gerald Butts,** veteran ministerial chief of staff Cyrus Reporter and former United Nations ambassador Marc-André Blanchard, were approached to take on the job but they declined, according to the sources.
Gerald Butts…*really?*
It’s kind of hard to convince Canadians you’re a hard pivot from the Trudeau era when you tap one of the most prominent members of his inner-circle who ultimately resigned during the SNC Lavalin scandal.
I get that Ottawa is a pretty small world, but good grief. Was Katie Telford busy or something?

It’s very surprising there aren’t people lined up to take this job because the chief of staff is arguably the 2nd most powerful person in the entire government after the PM.

Am I tripping balls here or did this newspaper once used to be good? So here we have a dramatic headline, an editorial type write up, all based on two “unnamed sources.” It’s the kinda thing I’d expect from a random blog not the institution once called “Canada’s Newspaper of Record”…
