The Canadian left had an untethered run for 9 years. Jagmeet and the NDP were seen as the leg that propped up an unpopular leader for 18+ months.
Moving forward, the NDP should think about and develop policies/ideas that help the little guy and shouldn’t worry about whether it’s a left leaning or right leaning policy.
The Canadian left has several socialist options that aren’t the NDP. Hopefully more Canadians see them as viable options once they feel the affects of neoliberal austerity.
If the NDP don’t put forward a socialist leadership team and platform that materially differentiates them from the neoliberal parties, they’ll struggle to regain any ground on the Liberals.
It’s refreshing to see a commentator talking about unions and a communitarian outlook being part of the way forward. That at least gives people the opportunity to be part of the solution, which is a better strategy than exclusively focusing on getting people riled up against corporations and hoping it’s enough to make them vote for you. It’s also a better alternative than identity politics, which fails to give people a goal or let them be part of a solution because it’s inherently divisive even when well intentioned. Letting convoy Canadians co-opt the language of unity was a damning indictment of the Canadian left’s failure to bring people together with shared goals and values.
The left must go left.
We need to promote non-market solutions for essential needs in housing, communications, health care. End the pandering to profit-seeking private interests to promote public funding for public service. Public/private partneships inevitably end up with the private plundering the public and running away with the spoils.
