This now feels like it’s creating a problem, to sell the solution…
Well they have been pitch rolling for this statement for a while now, rather than do a total U turn and have very wealthy people get the Winter Fuel payment again, it looks like they will raise the cap on who can claim it. Its still means testing but with a much higher ceiling so no more missing out by being over the current cap by £1.50.
Its not even a U-Turn, its just doing donuts in reverse gear now.
More bribes to win the pensioner vote with the tab being picked up by the tax payer. Cheers Kier.

For all the furore they’ve got over the cut to WFA they may as well gone with full blown pension reform.
Also a U turn isn’t going to win back any voters in my view, you can’t put that genie back in the bottle.
I really don’t get why winter fuel payments is such a big deal. It’s means tested. We should not be giving it to people who don’t need it.

To be honest the whole thing was framed badly. It was framed as „axing the winter fuel allowance for poor pensioners“. When in reality it was „means testing benefits“.
I would have bundled it with a package of means tested benefits changes, that way it would be harder to argue against this cut because you could just turn around and say „we didn’t axe it, we means tested it“.
I think the issue is that it’s been sold as a personal attack on a specific group in society. If it had been part of a wider package of means testing *all* benefits, it would have felt less personal.
It seems like pretty much everything in the budget is being watered down other than the extra taxes on working people.
Why not just assign each pensioner a young person to be the there slave instead?
Every other benefit is means tested , why shouldn’t this be?

Perhaps raising the cap would be a good idea but there are a lot of well off pensioners who really don’t need the payment. I spoke to someone last week who said they used theirs to buy a coffee maker!!
Imagine if they actually addressed the underlying cause and fixed our broken energy system. We have the highest energy rates in Europe, spending something mad like 60% more per unit than most European nations.
We could save on all this means testing admin bullshit because no poor fucker would need it.

Hell, there was a BBC story about pensioners lamenting losing the payment because „I can’t put it towards a holiday or a treat anymore“
It should be means tested, properly means tested to make sure only poor pensioners get it.
So pensioners will get money and the disabled and lowest paid will get shafted?
How when presented with options this government continues to pick the stupid one is beyond me.
