      The salary is what it is because they can attract enough people to work for that amount. It has nothing to do with taking people seriously.

      we esteem work very differently on the basis of gender, and pay goes up and down on that basis of that esteem

      look at the early computer programmers – when that was considered a job for women. they were paid peanuts.

      This is what the RCN voted for a few years back – they voted against initiatives to attract men into nursing. And they badly bungled the strike ballots previously. Nurses deserve a strong, competent union, and we can hardly take the RCN seriously

      I think there are many factors that are also being overlooked.

      Nurses are being overworked. And as a human, we can only put in more that 100% for so long before you get burnt out and are unable to meet the demand.

      If nurses had more resources, and fewer patients, they’d be more aware of each patient, and more available in general. A nurse who is more available would be respected more.

      Whereas a tired nurse who is constantly running around, but is unable to meet all the needs due to too many patients, can’t be as helpful.

      Look at the difference between how male tailors are seen, as opposed to seamstresses. Same skill set. Same job. One title is respected, one’s not. Evidence: Look up the job of the mantuamaker in the 18th century, and what happened in the sewing industry at that point. (Youtubers: bernadette banner, Abbey cox, etc)

      It’s happening now in the trades. Men are heavily gatekeeping, but more and more women are getting into trades. What’s happening? Salaries are going down, same as what happened in the 18th century sewing trades. (Look up lexi the electrician on YouTube, or heck, my lutherie class at university rn is 70% women)

      The term is called male flight. Look it up.

      Ridiculous clickbait, as many others have said the public are nothing but glowing about nurses. I can only assume this is some weird attempt to invent a problem, piggybacking off actual real ones, to further some other goal (being a union presumably support for action to better conditions for nurses.)

      At any rate, possibly is doing ***a lot*** of lifting here. That union chief is ***possibly*** a massive fibber because he’s 90% idiot.

      Not taken seriously? By bloody who!? Everyone and I mean everyone I know who has ever dealt with nurses say their compassion and professionalism is world leading. Whoever doesn’t take nurses seriously is in the same camp as the ubique ‚white supremacists‘. Spoken about but rarely seen.
      In English culture, women are loved and respected, whoever wrote this rage bating crap has too much time on their hands!

      It’s more to do with it being a „care“ profession, like teaching, and support work.

      You’re supposed to do it because you’re a good person, and the money is secondary, that’s the mentality pushed by manglement to justify not paying you and making you work unpaid overtime.

      I’ve lost count of the „think of the children“ excuses I’ve heard as a teacher to justify making me work longer hours unpaid.

      These professions hide behind the sick, the innocent, and the vulnerable, using them as human shields to justify their shitty treatment of the frontline. Being male or female has nothing to do with it, it’s (as always) about money.

      I dunno in UK, but male nurses in NL get effectively discriminated out of a job, mostly because trust & religion.

      It’s interesting but I had the opposite- if trades/craftsmen weren’t so male dominated, they’d be taken more seriously in terms of prestige and academic qualifications required, which would probably be for the worst.

      Also the real not taken seriously are the people that develop medicines, develop medical equipment, pioneer new techniques etc. Everyone claps for the frontline health staff, but no one cares about those beavering away trying to develop new drugs, devising clinical trials etc. Really sucks how hard science is so denigrated. In fact I’d even say that a lot of frontline staff seem ignorant of the whole research process. I opted out of vaccine for covid because I was concerned about the rigorousness of the medical trials into the vaccines and with no underlying health problems I decided covid was an acceptable risk and people who got vaccinated where getting it anyway, because hey a virus evolves. Staff members looked at me like I was Hitler.

      This is absolutely true, it shouldn’t be, but it is. It’s easy to bang pots and pans and speak of ‘heroes’ and ‘angels’ but paying them what they deserve would mean giving them the respect they deserve.

      This source seems dumb lmao. I don’t know many people who don’t take nurses seriously because they’re women, i think they’d be taken less seriously if they were a man. Women are, in general, just better at „people jobs“ and are more commonly friendlier or more approachable. Not that men are not friendly or approachable, but yk. (I am a man, to be clear)
