I can’t believe people are being so cruel. I follow Michael Whelan who has gone through cancer 3 different times and he wrote something today that really stood out to me.
Former President Joe Biden
When Compassion Becomes Inconvenient
by Michael Whelan.
Somewhere along the way, we stopped believing that pain—real, human pain—deserved reverence.
I read earlier that President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. I paused, not for political reasons, but because I know what that diagnosis feels like. Not just the words, but the earthquake behind them. The silent aftershocks that ripple through a man’s body, through his marriage, through his future.
I’ve walked out of those rooms. Three times. Prostate. Head and neck. Tongue. Each one robbed me of something, and not just from my anatomy—but from my faith in how we treat one another in our most vulnerable hours.
And yet… I see jokes. I see cruelty disguised as memes. I see people using a man’s illness—no matter who he is—as a punchline, as if cancer could ever be funny. As if mortality were a partisan issue. As if dying meant nothing if the person isn’t wearing the right colors.
What has happened to us?
When did we become so morally malnourished that we forgot how to care?
There was a time, not long ago, when a neighbor’s diagnosis meant casseroles on the porch, hands on backs, and whispered prayers on behalf of someone you might not even know. There was a time when the word cancer softened voices, slowed tempers, made enemies reach, if only for a moment, toward grace.
That time is not now.
Now, we scroll. We judge. We comment with snark and hashtags and venom, and then we scroll on. We measure a man’s worth by his politics instead of his pain. We decide who is deserving of empathy and who is not.
Let me say this plainly: Cancer is not a partisan disease.
It doesn’t care how you vote. It doesn’t check your Twitter feed before it hijacks your prostate or invades your lungs. It does not discriminate by age, race, gender, or office held. It doesn’t know if you’re a sitting president or someone like me—a wannabe writer trying to make peace with the scars and treatments and long nights praying your wife, who battles Parkinson’s, can sleep without pain.
So when we laugh at Joe Biden’s diagnosis, what we’re really doing is revealing the most broken parts of ourselves.
And maybe that’s the real cancer. The slow death of compassion. The terminal erosion of grace.
We need to remember—urgently—that beneath every suit, behind every title, inside every home, beats a heart that bleeds the same. A body that breaks. A family that fears. A life, no matter how public or private, that can end without warning.
I write this as someone who knows how it feels to be dismissed. To feel your body betray you. To be measured by people who couldn’t last a single hour in your hospital bed.
I beg us to do better.
Not for Joe Biden, though he deserves decency like every human does. Not for me. But for the country we keep pretending we want to be. One where we rally in pain, not ridicule it. One where we allow the word cancer to hush our divisions, if only for a moment.
One where kindness isn’t radical. It’s just expected.
Because if we can’t find our humanity when death knocks on the door, then maybe it’s not the disease that’s advanced—it’s our moral failure.
And that, too, will kill us.

The fact that they can simultaneously wish him well and accuse him of being involved in the most dangerous cover-up of the presidency tells us these are just fundamentally dishonest people. They know Biden was fine as a president, but the grift requires constant rage and constant motion.
Also, getting absolutely outraged about and invented story that the other guy’s doctors covered up his bad health smells more than a little like projection to me.

Imagine if trump got cancer. „The cancer is rigged!“, „Mine is worse than bidens, that is how you know I’m more important!“, „The pope did this because he’s jealous of me, the greatest pope who would have been, but he stole it from me!“, „Anybody else with my cancer wouldn’t have made it a second. I’ll win again, I’ve got the cards!“ „They say I can’t be president and be on chemo!“ He would die the following week followed up by a KimJong Ill parade of MAGAs for the trump funeral on the road all theatrically crying. The magas will put lip gloss below their eyes with glitter to make it look like they are crying. MAGA guys will do it going into work with it on their faces. They won’t notice until someone tells them that it looks like dried cum on their face and then they’ll pretend they never did it. 2026 🤞

msw2age on
The „conspiracy“ is that Biden knew of his diagnosis while he was president. I’m no doctor but that seems reasonable to me given how late stage the cancer is, given that he chose not to run again, and given that there’s precedent for that sort of thing with e.g. the government hiding FDR’s polio symptoms. The American government does not like to tell the world that its leader is terminally ill and make itself seem weak.
Now the conservative weirdo idea that this is somehow „evil“ is bullshit. If he had ran for president again knowing that he likely wouldn’t survive his term that would be bad. But he didn’t do that.
