In the grand old tradition of protecting child rapists, the Catholic Church excels above all else.

Want to get to heaven but molested kids and don’t want to go to prison, tell a priest!

I could see a world where psychiatrists were exempt from reporting, because they could help the patient resist their crimes. Call me soft but I don’t think someone with a compulsion and attraction as evil, more of a mental illness.

But the fact they just confess to a priest to feel better about and get into heaven, I don’t see that reasoning as justified.

This would make ordained Catholic priests extinct in the UK right?

Since they’d either not report on confessions and be prosecuted.

Or report on confessions and be excommunicated.

I don’t particularly mind it, but will be interested to see the effect it has on the growing Catholic community in the UK.

    4. The Crime and Policing Bill, which has reached Report Stage in the House of Commons, does not include criminal penalties for individuals who fail to report child sexual abuse.

We should have no religious exemptions to any law tbh. Otherwise why even have the law in the first place?

And why would there be? It should be made clear that religious confession has no legal meaning and anything you say can be used against you if necessary regardless of what your religion says.

    7. Presumably this will result in no one confessing to it then, rather than any priests ever having to divulge.

Like, if I was an abuser and knew the person i was speaking to had to report it… I wouldn’t speak to them about it.
