> “There’s this bullshit fallacy that you need to have experience or sort of like technical adeptness, and it’s safeguarding the business. It’s a real male perspective,” Stewart said during the conversation. “Like, as if it’s this difficult thing to do. Anyone can make a movie if they have something to say.”
> Stewart, who has been open about her struggles to get “The Chronology of Water” financed, said the most difficult thing about making films is finding funding and “having the commitment, because it’s a long-term investment time-wise.” Stewart noted that she “promptly evaded America, that son of a bitch” to make her movie, which was filmed in Latvia and Malta.
I wish I could make my own project up to keep myself busy . It’s a real Rich person perspective to complain about ..
Experience is one hell of a thing if you want to consistently do good though. It’s hard enough to make profitable films, I can very easily understand why investors would want their directors to have experience.
Imo nothing tells you how good an upcoming film will be as the directors previous work
ok she better watches my completely shitty movie then 😉
obviously not everyone can direct a movie. also not everyone with experience automatically makes good movies. but the probability is pretty much on the side of the experienced.
pretty simple actually

I agree with her. Why won’t people just give millions of dollars to someone to do a job, when that person has no experience with said job. So unreasonable…
Yes that’s true. Anyone can make a movie. It probably won’t be any good and it would be insane for someone to invest in it but yeah anyone can make a movie.
Then being a director is pretty worthless , same could be said for acting
All art for that matter
Glad doctors and pilots have experience , stuff that matters
smh, some of these actors/actresses think they’re saying something „deep“ but just come off sounding so dumb
and not everything is the patriarchy
if people are going to invest money in you to the tune of millions, it is not unreasonable to have some level of training or experience
that isn’t the patriarchy, just basic sense
then again ,her net worth is reportedly $30 million , she can give a couple million to some inexperienced
but she won’t , because people talk big except when it comes to their own money being on the line – convenient !
You need experience in life to know that having experience is better than not.
Yeah, and I once wrote a children’s book too. Not on purpose.
On what planet is that a male perspective?
Very cool Kristen thanks.
What a little …nevermind i don’t wanna get banned
Shame on her for making this a gender issue when anyone with a functioning brain knows that wanting to hire and pay someone with the expectation that they have the skills and experience to complete the job is not a MALE perspective. It’s just THE perspective.
Idiotic statements like this absolutely harm the progress towards gender equality. Now, If I was an investor, I wouldn’t hire her to direct a film because I don’t trust her to handle difficult situations rationally without blaming the wrong people/processes that may need to be addressed because she is too focused on her own “bullshit” and can’t identify truth from fallacy.
I did it! “engrams” but I’m a dude who ain’t know shit <3
If you got the money, but it might suck
Tommy Wisseau liked this post.
Hire a first time director for the next film you produce. Problem solved.
Ah yes. Experience means nothing. Go ahead a hire me for your taxes. I’m sure I know more than an accountant doing their job for 20 years.
Everybody here acting like there haven‘t been extreme banger movies made by first time directors.
I agree. anyone can make a movie. do what Kevin Smith did: sell all your comics, get a bunch of credit cards, max them out, and raise 30k to make your movie. if it’s any good, you’ll sell it.
OH, you just want people to GIVE YOU their money with no stake or risk from you? Piss off.
So, I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt after reading the article. It SEEMS (I could be totally off base here) like what she was trying to get at (poorly) was the need for new blood or new voices as directors? She talked about working with a director and wondering why something is done the way it is, her being questioned on her casting choices, and the difficulty attaining funding. I could also take it as a “how do you get experience if you have no experience” kind of thing.
You know someone is talking out of their ass when they try to gender something like this.
I would LOVE to see the evidence that men specifically engineered the idea of requiring experience before devoting millions of dollars to a project. lol
Anyone can direct. Not everyone can direct well.
Bro she sounds dumber than when twilight. Why is she relevant still? She’s the millennials Sarah Jessica Parker.
Yes but my god there are so many actors turned directors who are complete ass at directing. Totally different skillset.
Tom Cruise says you better at least learn about your lenses. I think Bruce Willis said the same thing about Kevin Smith.
anyone can direct- but you prob do need real experience if your want to convince a major studio to produce your film on their dime
She’s insufferable. All jobs look at your experience when considering you for employment. Before giving you millions to direct a movie, they probably want to see if you have the skills to do so. This has nothing to do with men or gatekeeping, this has to do with risk assessment on an investment.
Also, anyone can direct, but not everyone can direct well. She has been in the industry for decades, so she has a lot of related experience. If she’s been paying attention to what a director does on set for all this time, then she has a better idea of what the job entails than the average Jane. Doesn’t mean she’ll be a good director, but she’ll at least have a baseline for the job going in. So her personal experience is still vastly different than aspiring Directors with no experience.
And anyone can be a surgeon if they have a sharp enough blade… but I suspect the quality of the outcome may differ somewhat.
No matter how passionate I may be about a story, I am pretty sure one directed by Spielberg is going to draw better reviews.
