Meh, national post doing national post things. Yes he was the mayor but there was a collective failure at the municipal, provincial, and federal level. I’d prefer to give the new Minister the benefit of the doubt. Let’s judge him 6-12 months from now

I’m not defending him exactly, but is there anyone in parliament with housing experience that actually has a good record? Or even outside parliament, housing’s a tough problem that no one seems to be able to solve
Vancouver’s housing prices went beyond normal before any other places in Canada. It started near 2010.
There was a lot of buyers bringing cash from overseas buying homes as investments and launder money. This is why BCNDP introduced the Speculation and Vacancy tax very shortly after it took power.
You also regularly saw new condo projects presale being advertised and had presale events in Singapore and Hong Kong.
Problem of Gregor Robertson was he was dismissive of the demand side of the issue when he was the mayor of Vancouver, and people were pissed condo presales were listed overseas.
It was not entirely his fault. I still blame BC Liberals for screwing up Greater Vancouver’s housing.

He a big city liberal and comes off as but rich and elite.
Alresdy sent a very poorly worded policy on housing that likely wont play well with many who expected some real change.

Apparently foreign nationals buying real estate was in fact a core issue affecting affordability, so much so they needed a foreign national ban in 2023. Robertson will fit right in using racism to deflect from systematic failures.
