Think tank is such orwellian double speak. I’m not sure a bunch of conservative cranks really needed to do all that much thinking to come up with the idea to liquidate the public service. It’s actually been tried before, being tried now south of the border.

Adding to that that Maxime Bernier was once the Vice-president of it, this „think tank“ is essentially a megaphone for the far-right.

Chrétien Liberals laid the groundwork for so many of the current major issues. Doubling down on neoliberalism will only result in a toxic populist wave.

What happened back then was workloads increased to unmanageable levels.
Senior staff were given $100k+ buyouts to retire early.
Deadlines couldn’t be met.
Some programs were cut. Eventually, staffing levels returned to pre-cut levels, at least in Environment Canada.
There is no appreciable amount of unnecessary staff now.
This think tank should shove it’s head up its ass.
Given that the Montreal Economic Institute is a very conservative think tank, I’d be shocked if they *weren’t* advocating for cutting public sector jobs no matter what the current circumstances were.
A few things.
First off, this is not a „think tank.“ They are lobbyists masquerading as a think tank and are financed to present certain opinions.
Second, the public service absolutely could be reduced, particularly certain areas or Departments. To do this effectively though you also need to look at overly complex rules, laws, demands from political masters or courts and do a cost benefit analysis. A lot of the inefficiency is NOT driven by the public sector itself, it’s forced on it. Those political masters need to take some risks themselves.
Also, if you are going to cut the political masters should try to determine which types of positions, rather than just blanket across the board.
