There’s this weird kind of rhetoric you see from people who support mass immigration – not only are you not allowed to disagree with them (that’s racist), in their mind you aren’t even allowed to point out the effects of the policies they support (that’s racist, too).
Their position is so morally unassailable that they do not have to defend their policies; they don’t even have to acknowledge they exist in the first place. She notes that Britain hit a record for net migration in 2023 with 906,000, but doesn’t mention that Canada had 50% greater migration with half the population that same year. She notes this is all hunky-dory as the population of the UK is *only* 15% foreign-born and can go a lot higher (this feels vaguely like a threat).
We can’t keep going on each year with bringing in 1.5 million new immigrants and building 200k houses. Like it or not this is going to be ruinous for the country, and by extension ruinous for political parties that support it. If you see immigration at this scale as a positive thing that is good for Canada, by all means – but you have to make it work, and you have to convince Canadians it works. Just calling people bigots over and over is not going to keep the pitchforks away forever.

How long does unemployment, especially youth unemployment, have to keep going up until people stop buying this argument?
Considering Carney is planning to lower the numbers, I’d say we’re doing what it says in the title.
I don’t consider our immigration conversation to be anything akin to Nigel Farage talking about drowning people in the English Channel. Neither are we as sinister as Le Pen, or Donald Trump. Let’s keep it that way and always move our immigration number where it’s most effective.
Was Canada „populist right“ during all of 1950 through 2015, when immigration rates were stable and much lower?
Did we fail the „democracy litmus test“ each of those years?
The concerns in Canada about immigration relate to housing shortage, lack of family doctors, diploma mills, fraudulent labour market opinions and a disproportionate intake from one region of one country. It’s not an opposition to immigration in principle but a frustration with federal and provincial governments for having mismanaged the file. The best way to address this is to fix those problems.
It made the left win though.starmer won because he was like high immigration is bad for the working class. Then he won in a landslide. Social services and low immigration? That’s straight victory in an election. If a left leaning party did that the conservatives would lose all their seats in Canada.

The left adopting corporate takes on immigration is what makes working class people turn right. Is it racist to not want to import a new underclass of people when you are already the underclass? Why would working class folks want a race to the bottom for wages, compete for shelter spots and fight out foreigners in the food bank lines? Only liberal/progressive elite like mass immigration because they are less impacted by it
Labour is not “the left” and they havent done anything remotely “left” under the starmer government. They are tories with a different colour.
