      The new arrivals are Afrikaners—descendants of mainly Dutch and French colonial settlers—who make up about 2.7 million of South Africa’s 62 million people, more than 80 percent of whom are Black.

      The expedited resettlement has sparked criticism, with detractors arguing that it allows white South Africans to bypass a refugee system where thousands from conflict zones around the world remain stuck in years-long vetting processes and dangerous conditions.

      I don’t usually think of churches / Christians as being christian.  My respect for the group is  very low – likely because I see more hate and intolerance from every faction of the religion.

      This decision and the new pope give me hope that the greed and selfishness and hate that this group of people believe in may be waning and they are returning to Jesus Christ.

      The Biblical MAGA Governor of OK is going to hate what Alex Jones had to say. There is no unified MAGA doctrine. Different tribes of MAGA hate some different things. MAGA of the Church is different than MAGA of the Streets. They like Trump because he plays both sides. He’s their perfect malcontent for everything that they can all share something in.

      Every major religion has branches and denominations that can be right wing, centrist, or leftist. Off the top of my head I think of branches of Methodists and Episcopalians in America, as well as many Jewish, Sikh, Buddhist and Muslim branches.

      The United Church of Canada in my neighbourhood was the first „inclusive, affirming“ church in Canada. Which means they were the first religious order to perform same-sex marriages, even before the Liberal party legalized it federally some 20 years ago. They also had LGBTQ minsters and officials. They also shut down the dance studio that rented their basement (a source of income that they could really use) to set up a program to feed, shelter, counsel, and help struggling and homeless people navigate social services and successfully apply for jobs.

      The New Democratic Party (democratic socialist), which governs Manitoba and British Columbia provincially (and has governed I believe 6 or 7 out of 10 provinces over the years), and which was the major force behind socializing health care in the 1960s, was largely created by activist ministers.

      The best christians follow Ephesians 2:10, which states that believers are „created in Christ Jesus for good works.“* A lot of modern christians would like to defund pretty much every passage of the bible that invokes Bill’s famous line „Be excellent to each other“.

      * And „good works“ means working to build up struggling communities, not signing up your neighbours and colleagues to join your stupid church so that the minister can buy a private jet or put in a swimming pool next to his swimming pool.

      For folks asking about funding-

      There are federal grants available to any non-profit (churches included) to essentially subcontract for services like refugee resettlement, shelters, feeding programs, or health services. Most denominations have dedicated arms that are built specifically to oversee these programs (Catholic Charities, Lutheran Family Services, Methodist Relief and Development, etc…)

      They have to comply with the federal grants, including limits on the religious dimensions of these programs. Usually that isn’t an issue as these programs fall within the scope of the social mission of these churches, unless they very suddenly don’t, which is the case here.

      Episcopal Migration Ministries started when we started turning away ships of Jewish Refugees prior to WW2, it began as an advocacy org and later developed into one of the largest federal resettlement agencies in the US, with over half a million people resettled over 40 years.

      What they’re saying now is that this resettlement policy- fast tracking Afrikaners while refusing to comply with federal court orders- is contrary to the mission of TEC, and they’re voluntarily cancelling their federal contracts.

      Trump can threaten to defund them all he wants. They already said they don’t want the money.
