It will never happen.
I’ve lived in Leeds since coming here for Uni in 2000, and talk about trams comes and goes and nothing ever progresses.
Bradford to Leeds seems like such an odd one to start with considering those cities are already connected reasonably well with the train.
What Leeds needs is more of a link between the city centre and its surrounding towns and suburbs.
Obviously the Uk desperately needs more regional public transport in places that aren’t London.
But that’s an obscene timeframe. Three years before they can even _start_ construction. No-wonder it costs so much to deliver infrastructure projects in this country.
Then they will distribute that £1bn to various CEOs and executives of these companies and agencies (while MPs invest in their stocks), make a performative and deliberately failed attempt at building the tram network, pocket the cash with no refunds, and congratulations; leed and/or Bradford have just successfully lost £1bn. Corruption; a story as old as time.
Electric buses on dedicated lanes (alike a Tram without the insane expense and disruption). No need to have rails these days. Just paint a line on the road and a bus can follow it like a track.
If it ever happens, and if it’s done correctly it’ll be fantastic.
Two big ifs though
Leeds (and several other UK cities) desperately needs a tram network, but I just don’t see the politicians in Westminster getting off their arses to get it done
Is there much call for a Leeds-Bradford route? There are regular trains on that route that stop at Pudsey and Bramley. Very few people get on or off
I’ve heard that Leeds is the biggest city in Europe without a mass transit system (tube, trams etc) – So I assume it must happen eventually
Why all these radial tram routes they’re so inefficient. Just build a circle line (can start now as a bus rapid transport and evolve to a tram route later) in Leeds and build high density around it.
Leeds and Bristol are the two cities I’ve visited in the UK with the worst public transit, or lack of it. Both cities would be perfect for trams. The difference I experienced when I most recently visited Manchester was significant – I hadn’t been for years, and going back again was a great feeling. They’ve done an amazing job with the city centre, with a pretty comprehensive (and growing) tram network, and there seems to be a drive for continued improvement. All of our cities (and indeed towns) large and small should have super-efficient mass transit, which would improve quality of life and ultimately be cost effective.
