Christopher Nolans Dunkirk Tops Umfrage über britische Lieblingsfilme des Zweiten Weltkriegs

Really? Who on earth did they ask? It’s a *decent* film, but it is all CGI and empty beaches.

Its not as gritty as Das Boot, as gory as Saving Private Ryan, as chilling as Come and See, as star studded as A Bridge Too Far, as fun as Kelly’s Heroes, as action packed as Where Eagles Dare, as iconic as The Great Escape, etc.

Not really that good honestly think films like The Cruel Sea and In which we serve are much better even if they are way older. Throw in the Battle of Britain and clearly the Dam busters just because it was always on at Christmas.

I can only agree with some of the other comments raising an eyebrow.

I like a lot of Nolan films, I think Interstellar and Inception are bonafide modern movie classics, but Dunkirk was a mess. That melodramatic bit with the plane gliding 4eva was one of the unintentionally-cheesiest moments in a big budget film I’ve ever seen.

I watched it recently with decent headphones. The sound effects were brilliant, it really changed my view of the film.

Dunkirk is not the best, and certainly not the worst but it is probably the most irritating as there is a great film buried somewhere in there.

It was crying out for better (or any) effects, the disguised French soldier subplot was both absurd and insulting because French soldiers were evacuated on equal terms, having the soldier read the paper about the RAF was lazy, as if writer and director could not think of a better way, and could not be bothered to think of one.

Seeing this in the cinema was traumatic. It was so excessively loud it was borderline torture. And on top of that it was incredibly mediocre, they barely had even a hundred men on the beach it looked comical.

I’ve not seen Dunkirk so can’t comment on it, but in what universe is Pearl Harbour considered anyone’s favourite war film? The film turns a pivotal moment of WWII into a romance, and not a very good one. There’s little attempt in the film to make it historically accurate. A couple of reasonably good action sequences and little else. Guessing people who chose it haven’t seen many war films.

All the other entries in the list, however, look solid. Saving Private Ryan and Bridge Over the River Kwai are two of my favourite films.

I’d replace Pearl Harbour with Goodnight Mr Tom, which is less a film about WWII, but rather one set in WWII. Same for Grave of the Fireflies (another outstanding film, but my goodness it’s depressing – I’ve not been able to rewatch it). I think the civilian side of war doesn’t get enough attention in film.

Not even top five for me. It’s decent but it didn’t really engross me like others have.

TORA! TORA! TORA! is one of my faves, followed by the ones that a lot of others in the thread have mentioned.

Did they poll children? I mean Nolan’s good but I wouldn’t even rank Dunkirk above Band Brothers – and that’s not even a movie.

Dunkirk was let down by Nolan’s ego and not wanting to use CGI. Because of that there was so much inaccuracy. Aircraft not in the correct numbers or formations or types, beaches practically devoid of people and equipment. It looked nothing like the photos of the real thing. Even using CGI to remove modern buildings in the locations it uses would have helped.

What really took me out of it was the lone Stuka – which would have never been flying around by itself getting shot down by a powerless Spitfire that just so happened to be there and in the right place at the right time. It’s just so unnecessary and unlikely. Him landing on the beach in itself was enough. But the worst is yet to come. He sets his plane on fire. It’s clearly wood and canvas with a scaffold frame.

That whole film was some sympathetic CGI away from greatness.

Is this recency bias? Cause there is much better WW2 films: Schindlers List, Saving Private Ryan, The Great Escape, Bridge on the River Kwai, A Matter of Life and Death, Casablanca. Why is Pearl Harbour so high up as well? 

A Bridge Too Far, Dambusters even Sink the Bismarck is brilliant, As a side note having seen Band of Brothers, The Pacifc and more recently Masters of the air it’s a real shame no British studios have ever done anything similar when there are great stories from our forces in WW2

The Battle of the River Plate is the best and I will die on that hill.

I am admittedly a massive fan of Nolan’s work and I had so much excitement for Dunkirk. The cast was strong and the premise seemed ideal for Nolan’s story telling.

However it just wasn’t the movie I had hoped for and came away from the cinema somewhat flat.

I’ve watched it several times since and it’s an immaculate film ….. just not what I wanted.

Mess of a film that is ruined by the forced time gimmick imo. Would have been better as dedicated films for any of the three different sections.

Anything is better than Dunkirk. All style, no substance. It’s just Batman fans trying to be film critics again. Best to ignore it and move on.
