Polymarket currently has a less than 2% chance of a liberal majority and while I’m not saying it’s remotely likely I still think that’s low, I really do. These are exceptional times and I don’t think we should be surprised to see exceptional things happen.
The margin is almost historically razor thin, it’s now widely reported the Liberals are clearly motivated to make this happen, and there are surely enough alienated conservatives on the progressive side of the tent far closer in idealogy to Carney than Poilievre.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I think it was originally reported cabinet swearing in was set for the 12th (not the week of the 12th, the 12th) and it’s now been moved to Tuesday. Is that to get a press conference in on Monday?
Carney is about to flip everything every one thinks they know about political identity upside down .
The wings are going to go absolutely bananas 😄 buckle up moderates, your finally behind the wheel agian .
I think one of the best moves Carney made was when he axed most of Trudeau’s bad ministers when he first formed his cabinet. Now it seems likely he’ll have to cut a few more ministers, but it’s a far more difficult task since there are fewer weak links. But some of those candidates that Carney recruited left very well paying jobs, and I doubt they left that to be a backbencher.
We’ll see how he balances this.
The bottom line is that if Carney wants to keep the cabinet size at around 30 or lower, and integrate a lot of new MPs into cabinet, a lot more of the Trudeau era veterans are going to have to be sacked.
Blair – He 100% should be kicked, and honestly, Trudeau should have kicked him about 5 years ago. He is a dinosaur, not well liked over his Toronto policing past, and they have more than enough Toronto ministers and have a few more they want to add. Easiest cut bait target.
McKinnon – Hasn’t been a great performer, is in an ultra safe seat that the LPC will easily win again if he resigns, they need more Quebec slots for newcomers like Leitao and Provost, and Carney being elected now gives less need for another Ottawa area minister.
Wilkinson – Having served as Trudeau’s environment and energy minister makes him toxic in the West and tied to carbon tax. If they want to put Gregor Robertson in cabinet, I think Wilkinson gets sacked to make room for him. They also probably need to put in a Vancouver Island cabinet minister to solidify those gains, making even less BC spots.
Pettipas-Taylor – She has never been a strong performer (already demoted out of cabinet once), it doesn’t make much sense to have 2 cabinet ministers from New Brunswick anyway, and they don’t need her for gender balance with some of the new options – she should be booted to make way for a PEI minister.
Duguid – They are likely to sack him to put Rebecca Chartrand in as the MB minister as she ticks a lot more boxes.
Guilbeault – I don’t think they outright sack him because of his popularity in Quebec, but keeping him away from anything environment or resource related will be critical – maybe make him Quebec Lieutenant/House Leader.
Freeland – Extremely polarizing and tied to Trudeau in the public’s mind, but also extremely competent. I think she stays in but in a critical but low public profile position like Treasury Board.
Erskine-Smith – I think it could go 50/50. Housing advocates and the left wing of the party want him to stay where he is, but the developers are lobbying for him to be removed. I have a feeling they move him somewhere like Employment/Jobs and possibly put Sean Fraser back in Housing.
Joly – She will stay in a senior position for sure, but probably 50/50 whether they move her from Foreign Affairs to another senior spot.
LeBlanc – Will stay in a senior position. I think he’s the favorite to be Foreign Affairs minister if they move Joly.
McGuinty – I think he might get dropped or moved to a lesser portfolio because of the numbers game and fact he’s an old white guy representing a safe Ottawa seat. Provost is probably going to Public Safety.
Champagne – He will keep a senior position, but I don’t think he’s the long term pick at Finance. Carney will probably put one of his high profile new recruits there.
Anand – Definitely set for a senior role.
Hajdu – Probably stays in as the Northern Ontario representative.
All of the new ministers Carney added probably stay in cabinet. The only exception might be Kody Blois, because I think he will want to put Sean Fraser back in cabinet, and there probably aren’t 2 NS spots.
