We need a two pronged approach to prisons:
1) Build more modern prisons to improve conditions. Prisoners who behave should receive much more than they do, including more outdoor time, more social time, better food and entertainment etc. Though of course these can be withdrawn for possession of contraband or dangerous behaviour at any time. I don’t really believe in rehabilitation but there should be some opportunities to prisoners who show interest.
2) Introduce corporal punishment to maintain order and give control back to wardens and staff, not organised crime gangs. Reintroduce hard labour.
Part of the problem we have is we have forgotten how to punish people. Once you send someone to prison the only increase in punishment is more prison or solitary confinement which isn’t that much different
Also, if you murder a prison officer you should obviously hang.
On the issue of prison officer corruption, this is just an issue of hiring the right people. With the right budget and working conditions it shouldn’t be difficult.
I think the minimum we should expect from a prison is that it provides an environment where people who want to rehabilitate are given the space to do so. We are a million miles away from that at the moment.
Violence and drugs are rampant. People are going to jail without a drug problem and developing one inside.
You’ve got 18 year old prison officers who have never left their hometown, they have zero qualifications, and they’re expected to keep control over some of the most manipulative people in the country. It doesn’t work
We’ve almost designed prisons so they create hostile environments for those inside, leading to people who weren’t violent before imprisonment becoming violent inside because they had no other choice.
Here’s a solution, get rid of the misuse of drugs act, it already is the leading contributor to knife crime.

He’s the Minister of State for Prisons. He can’t just shrug his shoulders and say „I know it’s crap, but it is what it is“.
Let’s not change the prison system though, they got human rights. Better to keep it like this right?
Timpson always comes across as a stand up guy. Kudos to him for his approach on hiring people who have served their time, and a solid appointment to government.

I worked with a drug dealer who had been released from prison and we had a pro ex prisoner hiring policy. He made money in prison than he did out of it selling drugs. No need to pay prison officer’s off either. They were that stretched they were just happy the addicts were calm and the gangs weren’t warring. Drug reform has to be looked at as the only real answer at this stage
Fella went from fixing items that tell the time to fixing folks that are doing time.
