This is a perfect example of performative politics doing real harm. Trump’s obsession with fighting “woke” nonsense just sabotaged a program that would’ve helped rural veterans and low-income communities, including his own voters.
Sounds like it never reached the people it was going to help. I would bet it has no negative affect for him. The people who would vote him don’t keep up on good things the government does for them.

In my neighborhood, in Indiana anyway, a Federal grant program planting trees was cancelled after it was awarded because the grant language included discussion about how the trees should be equitably distributed in the target areas. I find all these gotchas silly. It’s a “perfect” opportunity for Starlink or Meta or whatever to step in to provide internet access, Trump and his administration don’t give a shit, and his base is already brainwashed. It’s short-term losses (hurting his base, who don’t have much power and are easily convinced to blame Dems and communists or whatever anyway) for long-term gains (cronyism and kill DEI) as far as they’re concerned.

It strikes me how many of these policies fuck over his voting base horribly. Rural medicine depending on Medicare for funding. Black lung benefits. Fema. Tariffs wrecking small farms. Not tracking measles as it tears through red populations. The tariff crap directly impacts business owners who tend to skew right (chamber of commerce and Rotary are effectively Republican mouthpieces).
