IMO: this is the option the current Greenlandic population is most likely to accept, they get full independence from Denmark, massive subsidies from the us. a full customs union with the us, free access to all American government services, and free movement of people. while also being able to conduct their own diplomacy, not answer to any foreign overlord, and decide their own destiny with UN seats and everything. Essentially, it solves the monetary problem that has prevented Greenland’s independence without needing to sell its soul to a new master.

It also puts pressure on Denmark to sell the island. If the us is going to offer Greenland this, and the people look like they might take it. (It’s more freedom than they have now with a bigger subsidy) The Danish government will have to either suppress the population or cut a deal with the us. Denmark has already set up a system for Greenland to declare independence legally. If it looks like they will take it, then Denmark will have to look to get something out of it
