I hope they don’t. It’s a terrible idea and makes a complete mockery of rules.
If i got 40% on a test and passing was 50%, it would be ridiculous for me to argue passing should be changed to 40%

Respectfully as someone who’s voted NDP Hell No!! The party needs to rebuild without the government handing them anything, QP allocation yeah I get that but the NDP does not deserve party status and needs to dig itself out of bed they’re in.

One really important aspect that most people probably aren’t thinking of: Not having official party status means the NDP gets no spots in parliamentary committees.
That would mean on most committees the role of the extra opposition member would be filled by the CPC.
Why that matters to the LPC: They don’t have a majority, and that means they won’t have a majority in committees, and in a lot of committees this parliament they needed the NDP member to break deadlocks.
That’s why I suspect the Liberals will end up giving them official party status, it’s in their best interest.

Given that Doug Ford raised party status from 8 to 12 to screw the Ontario Liberals after the 2018 election, I think this would be a nice way for the Liberals to be the bigger person.

The current criteria for party status was set at 12 in 1963, 62 years ago, during Lester B. Pearson’s government. There were 265 seats in parliament then.
If anything, the criteria should be raised to 15 seats (4.5%) to account for today’s 343 seat parliament.

Any deal for that must include a supply and confidence agreement, or just bring the MP’s into the Liberal fold for the next four years to give them a majority.
