We now have a pope who may start a holy war by blessing deep-dish pizza over New York style

    2. >Prevost has faced criticism from advocates for clergy abuse survivors regarding his handling of sexual abuse allegations during his leadership in the Augustinian order and in Peru. The advocacy group SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) has alleged that Prevost failed to act against abuse claims involving Richard McGrath, a former president of Providence Catholic High School, allowing him to remain in his position despite longstanding accusations.

      That tracks.

Personally I think this was the best possible choice they could have made, he’s going to have a massive amount of influence in America at a time when the church probably feels it’s more important than ever to have and wield. He’s not a conservative, and will continue to advocate for a lot of Francis’s causes, likely immigration in particular.

Speaking not as a catholic, they actually have a chance to position themselves on the right side of history for once.

Imagine – this is the Catholic churchs way of spitting in Trumps face

At what time do old people watch the news? I can’t wait for Trump to take all the credit.

When we got German Benedict, *the* right wing German tabloid wrote the headline „We are Pope!“ (*Wir sind Papst!*).

Will be interesting to see how right wing nationalist media in the US reacts to „being Pope“.

An American pope with Latin American roots? Haha

I’d like to see Trump’s immigration agents try to deport him when Pope Leo XIV visits the U.S.

Word is, it was a group of Latin American cardinals who pushed for the election of Robert Prevost.

The only thing I know about Popes is what I’ve learned from Crusader Kings 3, so I can only assume Trump will be hitting him up for money every few months.

    9. This is a very surprising pick. Prevost was not really a top contender to most people, and the fact that he is an American is a huge part in this too. Typically the Church has tried to stay away from American Popes because of how much power the US already has in the world. This is a pretty big shake up.

As far as politics, I don’t think either side will be happy lol. While Prevost is a Moderate and not everything is known about him, he’s generally considered not *quite* as progressive as Francis was. Conservatives will likely dislike his general view points, but the fact that he is an American at the end of the day is a win for American Catholics who typically lean Conservative.

More moderate liberal leaning. American and has done a lifetime of work in south america.

This is an absolute warning shot at the trump admin. You couldn’t pick a better pope to define the antithesis of trump and his cronies.

Hopefully this energizes American Catholics who have increasingly felt distant from the papacy for decades. More importantly, pushes the American right back to the center.

      He is a naturalized Peruvian.

Pro immigration, concerned about climate change. Might be an American but he is not pro Trump

    12. He’s American AND Peruvian. Spent almost his entire career in Peru and has been a Peruvian citizen for ten years:

Chicago Native…be prepared…the Vienna Beef headquarters will be declared a holy site.

    14. American Christians gonna be in for a rude awakening when Leo stays the course of Francis’s commentary on Trump’s bullshit.

We’ll see how devout Trump’s catholic followers are when he inevitably attacks this guy.

Holy I don’t see how Trump’s name was mentioned here more than 20+ times.

An American pope? You know what that means: buffalo ranch communion wafers!

    18. It a great choice. Proud for America having its 1st Pope.

Also Francis laid ground work apparently for Leo to be elected as compromise candidate.

    19. Electing an American pope at a time like this is like being in the hospital and getting a visit from John Cena

    20. Did not expect an American pope, and if i was it would not have been this one, would have been dreading Dolan.

    21. TroubleshootenSOB on

First thing that came to mind was Jim Gaffigan’s jokes about kids daydreaming about being The Pope and „It would be great if you had a kid that ended up being Pope. That would be the ultimate bragging rights. ‚Oh, your son’s a doctor? Yeah, ours is Pope. Oh, they have a house? He has his own city.“

    22. Obvious-Gate9046 on

I can’t help but feel that Trump mocking Catholics by saying he wanted to be Pope is why they chose a Hispanic cardinal born in a city Trump regularly heaps extras hate on. The Trump effect in action.

Waiting for trump to make a statement taking credit for an American Pope being elected anytime now….
