And he won’t! All countries know he has no plan, let alone a concept of a plan. They also know they have nothing to gain in negotiating with a mad men over false pretences.
Countries will wait out the 90day pause while the consequences keep piling up and hitting Americans, bringing Trumps approval rating lower by the day and having him lose any leverage whatsoever

You guys don’t understand! By saying he’s made over 200 trade deals, everyone thinks they’re the 1 chump who are the only ones who havent made a trade deal.
So they’re going to immediately want to make a deal because they don’t want to be the only left out on this amazing opportunity.

Just a reminder that what he’s calling ‚trade deals‘, if and when they come, are far more likely to be „memoranda of understanding“ which are simply conceptual frameworks. It frequently takes 12-18 mos. to hammer out an actual deal with big trading partners. That means if he’s serious about using tariffs as leverage, the damage will be ongoing for some time.

When you talk to someone who wants something from you, and you ask „What would you like?“ and their response is „What can you do for me?“, then the meeting is over. Trump seems to think that simply sitting at the table is such an honour that people will trip over themselves to get a spot. He’s so far off that he’s not even wrong.

Other countries actually have professionals coming up with their plans, and they all understand that Trump’s supporters are due for a rude awakening when they finally realize that authoritarian dominance is a profoundly less effective strategy on the global stage than cooperation. Trump thought he could throw around America’s weight and bully nations willy nilly. He thought other Presidents were just too soft to do it. Idiot.
The central premise that other nations are taking advantage of America is stupid AF. That’s not how America works internationally. We’re not the good guys and we’re not altruistic. Every benefit we’ve provided (which have been many!) always came with expectations of certain returns – political deference, intelligence sharing, favoring American suppliers, and plenty more besides.
Trump trashed 100 years of investment just to get slapped in the face with the reality that America’s power and prosperity didn’t exist in spite of these relationships, but because of them. American exceptionalism is propaganda, these relationships were always the real source.
Most people have no fucking idea just how catastrophic the damage is going to be in the long run.
The entire world watched Trump renege on a deal that he made with Canada and Mexico. No one in the world trusts Trump to uphold his end of a deal, and that’s why no one wants to make a deal with him.
