We really need a federal judge, and then SCOTUS, to rule against the president’s emergency tariff powers. If congress wont rein him in the courts can. Either on the basis that this isn’t a power congress was able to delegate at all, or at least that the emergency is not real and/or that the tariffs are not really a response to it.

There’s so much cognitive dissonance amongst his base. Some of them realize he’s not holding up his promises (whoa shocker!), like gas prices not going down, but still think he’s actually looking out for their best interest.
Trump didn’t manage to do something this stupid in just one day; it’s the achievement of a lifetime built upon decades of indifference, decades of ignorance and decades of being impervious to evidence.

I’m amused that anyone thinking that what Trump has done in the past five months – including time before inauguration – would do anything to make an advantageous trade situation. Besides tariffs, he’s done measurable harm to American goodwill abroad, which is, in business terms, the advertising of a country – would anyone else bother to buy from a brand that openly disregarded its own negative press?
The money that Americans are saving by not buying goods from other countries is counterbalancing that deficit and helping to make us great. I’m told.

This is all so stupid because its just a massive tax on us and there is no capacity domestically to take up the slack and there wont be for years even if they coupled this with domestic industrial and tax policy that incentivizes manufacturing and industry to build here– which there not only isnt but hes trying to cancel and roll back the IRA/Chips act

Turns out, we still have to import goods, but no one has to buy what we’re exporting. Huh, interesting…
Not to mention tariffs are supposed to replace the income tax. Well that is supposed is a far fetched pipe dream. I highly doubt they will do that. So we just get double taxed and the rich get to buy all the assets and get a tax break.
Using overall trade deficits as an argument to add general tariffs is so unbelievably dumb.
Misunderstand trade deficits -> very high global blanket tariffs -> trade deficit goes up because globe stops buying from US -> more global blanket tariffs incoming.
Remind us what his spontaneous and unilateral trade wars were supposed to fix?
This Republican administration could have renamed everything and rode the positive gains from the last administration and just took credit for everything.
It would be so easy for them to actually make things better, take credit for it and get rich doing it.
