Throwing money at the boomers again…
Their messaging has been awful. Reform were able to convince people they were only cutting it for the poor. All they had to do when they announced it was to clearly explain they were cutting it for rich people with a lot of money / assets.
I feel like something our current crop of middle-managers in politics, along with their supporters, don’t seem to understand is that an important part of being a politician is bringing the public with you.
Labour’s platform over the past 12 months has largely been pushing through unpopular policies then going ‚actually we don’t care if they’re unpopular, there’s not an election for 4 years so fuck you!‘ But they’ve very quickly discovered that:
a) There *are* elections before 2029, and Labour have been doing very poorly in them.
b) That people *will* remember that the party pissed them off, and it’s going to be very difficult to win those voters back afterwards. People don’t have as short a memory as our politicians often hope they do.
A party which was actually connected with the broader public would have seen this coming a thousand miles away. But it’s painfully clear that Starmer’s leadership have consciously attempted to shutter themselves away from as much outside feedback as possible, which is exactly what leads to these sort of entirely avoidable errors.
Honestly if they just took a tough stance on ILLEGAL immigration they would shoot up in the polls , but they ignore it ?! all they are doing is helping reform .. like the reason they slumped is because of the winter fuel payment.. come on…
Imagine weathering negative headlines for months only to cave to farage within days of a bad result. Yet again, kier showing he has the backbone of a jellyfish.
I’d lose a lot of respect for them if they backtracked on this.
It should absolutely be means-tested. Fucking pensioners already have the triple lock raising their handouts above inflation and the vast majority don’t need another £200 handout.
How about instead of pandering to the old again implement compulsory voting like Australia, make more of the young actually get out and vote.
I thought we got past populist ideas when we voted out the Tory party. May as well have Boris back at this point, if Labour are going to go off the whim.

The winter fuel allowance being means tested it what is best. Not to mention the triple lock more than made up for this.

How many of the boomers throwing a tantrum about this are also raging against kids getting free school meals, using such charming slogans as „if you can’t feed them don’t breed them“? Handouts are only okay if it’s for them I suppose 🙄
Going for Boomer appeasement may win them some more votes from the older generation, but it will further alienate them from the younger generation who are very much wise to the fact that boomers are getting benefits that the younger lot are paying for and will never get themselves.
Perhaps they could look at why younger voters are looking at other parties? And tackle those issues instead?
The winter fuel cuts was the right move. Appeasing boomers for extra votes won’t work.

It’s honestly quite astounding to see a government get awarded such a large majority and then use it to push through such an unimaginative and inconsistent policy agenda.

They will make promises until they win, like he did to win in the first place, then back to usual. These people never get a second chance.
You must never stop allowing all your money to go to older people. They vote and you don’t. Doesn’t matter they kicked down every ladder they had (free uni, abundant council housing). Doesn’t matter they’ve had every opportunity to get rich. You must give them free money. You must allow us to give the richest generation in British history LITERAL CASH BRIBES. This is perfectly legal.
If the system was tapered then a lot of this shit could have been avoided. Under the current system a pensioner who lives off £228 a week pension is considered well off and can easily afford to pay their energy bills so gets no help, someone on £227 is poor and needs the fuel payment.
Who was hit hardest by the winter fuel payments cut? Not the well off middle class pensioners, it’s the traditional working classes, not even remotely rich but not poor enough for pension credit, the sort of people who have strong family ties and they’ll remember their nan having £300 taken off her and will share it on facebook, these are the very people who will be targeted by Reform.
Also some of the comments here, left-wingers pretending to be nice people but just as full of bile and hate as a Trump or Reform voter. Except the group they hate aren’t immigrants or trans people but old people – „old people, the group you can hate without losing your wokeness“
One final point, millennials outnumber boomers, they are the largest generation, governments should be listening but aren’t because they don’t vote in the same numbers as boomers. In 2019 the millennial GE turnout was around 60% the 65+ turnout was nearly 80%.
The article says they’re planning far deeper cuts in the autumn?!? Genuinely insane.

You ask boomers to make one little sacrifice amidst the arsenal of advantages they receive and the whole government gets a nationwide slump for it. Just so ridiculously privileged.
Mum lost it because of a small pension approx £300 a month on top of state pension. In no way is she a millionaire or rolling in money. She gave up work to look after my grandmother and me. Yes it’s only £300 but everything is well counted it made a difference. I’ll never vote for labour again and I make sure to remind people what they have done and are doing, liers is to mild of a, word for their actions

Pensioners receive more from the state than any other age group and have by far the most wealth. to no means test this benefit is obscene.

1) Sort out the price of energy – fast, because it’s the way to economic growth
2) Make a bigger noise about counter immigration
3) Reform the voting system
