      >WH Smith would have the right to cancel a year-long transitional services agreement (TSA) put in place with Modella Capital – which struck a deal to acquire the business in March – if it launched a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) before the first anniversary of the transaction’s completion.

So less a „ban“ and more a mild disincentive.

    2. Mass shop closures would obviously be bad for the staff who work there and I would sympathise with them. But I’m amazed that chain is still going in all honesty

I don’t think 12 months is going to register as an issue with any vultures.

    4. The one in my town closed and they changed it into a nice 2 screen cinema.
Wouldn’t go to watch the big movies but it’s really good for indies in the week.
      Altogether better so 🤷

I always felt like WH Smith deserved to go before Woolworth’s and definitely before Wilkos.

It’s amazing it lasted as long as it has. Even the shops interiors themselves look like they haven’t been touched since the 90s. It’s such a ridiculously drab and tired brand.

At least HMV have really tried and branched out to be the go-to for undergraduate nerd tat and freshened up most of their premises. Smiths have just sat back and whistled.

    6. WHSmith is just focusing on Travel now. The high street stores just weren’t profitable. Stores had to sell items for a massive mark up just to make a profit.

Travel stores (Airports, Hospitals, Motorway services) are able to sell items at the same mark up and people have no choice but to pay as no other options.

Hobbycraft bought the High Street chain but they will be trading under the name TGJones.

WHSmith were closing around 3 stores a month, there are still about 500 stores but many of these are not profitable.

      Source. I work with them.

I’m convinced my local is only staying open due to the Amazon lockers at the back of the shop, as the town already has a Post Office

The only time I use WHSmith is when there’s no other option… WEnt to the one in Kings X last week for a drink, almost £3 for a bottle of pop!!! I know that Train stations, airports and service stations are always more expensive that high street, but sometimes it feels they’re SO MUCH MORE expensive that they’re taking advantage that they are you’re only option.

It puts me off using them on the high street, where they’re still the most expensive!
