From my observations in TX, the number is much higher. I’ve seen 3 children walking to school in the past 2 years. Every school is catastrophically over-run with huge SUVs waiting for the pickup that they literally have the parents pull up on the school lawns front and back to try to minimize impact on the neighborhood. This is true at 3 of the 4 schools I drive by daily.
We’re working hard to get to that WALL-E body of goo in a wafting chair, starting them young!
It’s insane to me how many kids are driven to school now. When I was a kid, we walked.
I don’t have kids, and maybe it is just sensationalized in the media, but I have seen several horror stories in the US where parents get charged with crimes for letting their kid walk to school, even short distances.
I really hope when I have kids, I live in a place where they can walk to school. For obvious reasons(promotes self reliance, healthier, good habit building, independence) but also cuz I would get so angry with the pickup/dropoff lines.
