  1. >to access their share of that $5 billion, provincial governments will have to agree to pursue a number of reforms, including changes to make it easier to build four-unit housing in residential neighbourhoods.

    >Asked about the federal proposal on Wednesday, Ford said that zoning decisions are best left to municipalities.

    >”I don’t believe in forcing municipalities,” the premier said. “I believe in working with municipalities.”

This is the same premier who was willing to use the notwithstanding clause to redraw Toronto’s election ridings in the middle of an ongoing election. And who banned municipalities from using ranked choice ballots (the same system his party uses) when cities had already implemented the system. So it’s clearly not the case that he doesn’t believe in forcing municipalities as a principle.

Everyone ripped the Liberals a new one for saying housing was not federal responsibility. Now they are all “shocked Pikachu face” that thr Liberals are moving on it.

I love the way the Liberals did it. “Your jurisdiction, but if you play ball, here is some extra cash”.

They did the same with banning short term rentals, denying tax write offs without stepping into pt jurisdiction  https://www.cpacanada.ca/business-and-accounting-resources/taxation/blog/2024/february/non-compliant-short-term-rentals

     And with zoning regulations  https://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/professionals/project-funding-and-mortgage-financing/funding-programs/all-funding-programs/housing-accelerator-fund

It is a great approach to balance jurisdictinal issues with federal leadership that is supportive of municipalities and pts who make changes to support housing.
