To create this chart, I used R, along with the ggplot2, dplyr, and gridExtra packages for data manipulation and visualization. The dataset includes Barry Bonds’ career statistics from 1986 to 2007. Data was curated from baseball-reference.com.
The primary metric calculated is On-Base Percentage (OBP), which measures how often a player reaches base. The formula for OBP is:
OBP=(H + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF)
where H is hits, BB is walks (bases on balls), HBP is hit by pitch, AB is at-bats, and SF is sacrifice flies.
In addition to the actual OBP, three additional metrics were calculated:
1. **OBP Excluding Walks**: This metric removes the influence of walks: OBP Excluding Walks=(H+HBP) / (AB+HBP+SF)
2. **OBP Excluding Home Runs (HR)**: This metric excludes home runs: OBP Excluding HR=(H−HR+BB+HBP) / (AB−HR+BB+HBP+SF)
3. **OBP Excluding Both Walks and HR**: This metric removes both walks and home runs: OBP Excluding Walks and HR= (H−HR+HBP) / (AB−HR+HBP+SF)
These metrics provide insights into Bonds’ on-base ability under different conditions.
The accompanying table presents Barry Bonds’ career averages for these metrics. Annotations indicate his OBP rankings when excluding walks and home runs. Barry Bonds ranks 7th overall in MLB history for OBP, but his rankings change significantly when walks and home runs are excluded, reflecting the impact of these factors on his performance.
