Yeah, and colleges are probably cheaper than the prisons in terms of per capita government subsidy.

  2. I was not expecting Arizona and West Virginia to be purple on this map.

Jails can be very small, so it’s really not a fair comparison. Prison to college comparison would be more accurate.

  4. I think this speaks volumes about the current situation in the US regarding mass incarceration.

Colleges can be very small as well. I think it’s just meant to be a thought provoking map anyway, not scientific.

West Virginia has a black population of less than 3%, which would explain it being purple.

Education over punishment, more colleges for brighter futures.

This is a really silly map.

Practically every county in the US has a jail unless they consolidate with another county because they have such a small population. There are some jails with only a 50 person average daily population.

With the amount of counties, of course you’re going to get a large amount of places that fall under this.

The note at the bottom also excludes community colleges for some reason which almost every county has unless, again, they have such a small population they consolidate with other counties. They only list places you can earn at least a bachelors degree.

This is just a pointless map.

In my opinion if prisons in America would be like in good condition and proper rehabilitation like in Japan or Scandinavian countries, there is nothing wrong with having more prisons than colleges.

  10. not every state has the same sized jails, two big jails could do the job of 5 little jails, but neither really tells you much about the priorities of that state’s government. This map says almost nothing, you’d have to REALLY extrapolate to find some conclusion that wouldn’t be better communicated by a different map.

  11. Only cuz CA closes prisons every year in the name of JUSTICE REFORM. Instead of creating education programs to rehab people back into society

  12. I would be curious to see the same map using data on the proportion of the state budget that goes to the prison system. When I was in grad school, California flipped from spending more on education to spending more on prisons. I don’t know if it ever flipped back.

To be fair, people stay at each institution for different average lengths of time.

i thought we weren’t doing bad choropleth maps on this sub anymore

A lot of these are wildly inflated by the number of county jails. Yet, a lot of states *do* focus on locking a ton of people up to generate revenue.

Prison/jail population vs college population would be much more sensical comparison.

Btw, it’s not a direct equivalence. Counties jails and temporary detention facilities included in prisons/jails count, yet only 4 year colleges and not community colleges included in colleges count

I thought this was Russia or China or North Korea, but then I recognized the shape of the USA. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop)
